I bought a 42mm watch today with the sport band. I thought I was buying the largest band. The band on the watch says M/L. There was an extra S/M band in the box. The Apple website mentions a L/XL band, which is what I want. Do I have to buy that separately or is one available packaged with a watch? Can I just exchange what I have for what I want at a store?

The Apple Online Store shows the available product configurations. Apple Watch Sport presently includes a single Sport Band that can be configured to either S/M or M/L in length. The M/L & L/XL Sport Band is available to buy separately (in selected colours).
As this is a user-based technical support community, I'm afraid that no-one here can speak on Apple's behalf in advising whether any other options may be available to you (eg band exchange).

Please do offer the feedback i have just purchased a watch and got an XL band, (comes with a L in box also) but you can ONLY get in White or Black.. which ***** cause i had my heart set on the RED one.. i have sent my feedback and i think more people need to so that they bring a larger range to the bigger size bands
Apple is working with me to swap out my band so I get a L/XL. I had an XL band delivered to an Apple store and they are going to "make good" on my purchase so that I exchange my S/M & M/L bands for a M/L and L/XL in black.
