When I restore an encrypted disk from Time Machine, the contents of the restored disk is the same as the current one, not the version at the time it was backed up

I restore an encrypted disk from Time Machine, but it is not in the state it was when it was backed up. It is in the state what the current version of the disk is in. The contents of the disk are the same as the current disk. Why can't I access the older version of the disk? How is this even possible? Where is the older version which was backed up then?

Thanks

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5), Mail App 5.3 (1283)
