Q: Ipad really slow after update to iOS 9

I updated my iPad mini (1) to iOS 9 yesterday, and now it is really slow. It takes forever to open or close apps, the swipe to close is a real pain, I have to swipe several times before I can close an app, and sometimes they just won't go away. I am getting very frustrated with this and wish I had not gone and updated it. Has anyone else had this issue?

Well after owning every single model of iPhone, running 2 imac's and 2 iPad's and 2 iPad mini's Aplle have lost me I'm afraid. using the iPads at the moment is woeful and there is no solution after over 12 months of them being to slow to use. It's taken me 15 minutes to post this off a mini. The navigation is terrible.

So I'm going to buy 4 new Sony tablets this weekend and when our current 4 iPhone contract ends in April we will be switching to Samsung. The iMacs are fine for the time being.

im extremely disappointed in Apple and the idea they want you to keep upgrading the devices is just fraudulent in my view. So I'm out and I won't return to the fold either.

You'll find the EXACT same experiences OR worse with the Sony tablets running whatever version of Windows mobile or Android.

Not to mention viruses, malware and adware that will cripple those devices more times than the issues you have with Apple devices.

Good luck with all that as both mobile windows devices as well as Android OS devices have tens of thousands of malware, viruses and adware and an inferior app ecosystem.

    FYI,

No one and NOT Apple, either, is forcing you to do ANYTHING!

You chose to keep buying every single new iDevice that Apple put out.

You made that decision to do that! Not Apple.

    That stated,

I puchase new Apple computers and mobile devices when I feel the new hardware and software features warrant a new purchase which for me, I have just purchased a new iPad after 4 years and a new iPod Touch after nearly 7 years.

And I am STILL using my older iPad 2 and 3 models despite my new iPad purchase.

I used an iPad 3 and almost 3 years, ago, purchased a older, but like new demo iPad 2 for my wife at great discount!

    Both 64 GB storage models.

I now use her iPad 2 and she uses my iPad 3.

Both my older iPads run the latest iOS 9.2.1 very well.

Have you even looked through this posting for my suggested fixes, solutions and modified restore procedures to improve the performances of your iPad models before coming here and posting your rant about your Apple devices not running well and switching to another tablet brand?

I have two major postings here that I have posted several times in this thread post.

They have help, so far, over two dozen users with issues with the latest iOS on their older iDevice models.

I am not going to repost those procedures again for you.

Search for my helpful solutions in this post and try everything in them before coming into an Apple troubleshooting forum to rant and complain!

    Good Luck!

Ok thank you for your sweeping statement of a reply captain kirk.

For your info I read the thread before my supposed 'rant' and none, including your, solutions work for me.

The simple fact is an Apple update wrecked 4 iPads simultaneously. They are all running different apps for different family members so it's not a common 'app' causing the problem.

As for your view on android and Windows ....... Well all I can say is my Samsung 'work' phone and Sony 'work' tablet haven't missed a beat in 2 yrs use so far where as my Apple 'personal' iPads don't now work due to an Apple software update.

    Do you get it now??

Best solution for you is that you beam yourself up scotty!

Glad to hear that your Samsung and Sony devices haven't had any issues.

    That's really great!

Hope your complete switch to those devices continues to work out well for you.

Obviously, you are very careful with these devices and stay away from problem websites and downloads that may contain potential viruses and malware.

    That's good!

I hope you and your family enjoy your new Sony Tablets.

    Sorry to see you go.

Good Luck to you and be careful out there on the web with these devices. Lots of bad stuff for thise devices just waiting.

The solution worked perfectly for me (ipad mini 1)

    - do a full backup on icloud

    - reset all your data from your Ipad (Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap on Erase All Content and Settings.)

    - reboot, iPad will start as out of box with iOS9 (you have to login and you will have the option to restore from a iCloud backup)

    - Ipad mini now goes very well

    1 point more to Apple

IF you are using an original iPad Mini

and   you have had reduced performance issues after "upgrading" to iOS 8

and   you "upgraded" to iOS 9

DId you find that it made it better or worse?

It remained the same. Extremely poor and no difference between the two updates from a users point of view.

I am going to do this as a last ditched attempted although I have now bought the Sony tablets so if this works for the mini's then the kids can have them in the cars or I'll sell them on fleabay.

    Hi

    You may have a bug.

Go to settings iCloud back up now .

Then restore iPad back to factory settings .

Set back up over your WiFi

This will make ipad run a lot better .

I do this every few months with all my apple devices .

    Cheers

Thanks a bunch for sharing. I had the same issue and tried all the fixes you listed, until ' Reset settings' and wow!  it really worked!

iPad is back to its normal speed.

    Really appreciate your contribution.

Out of curiosity, If you haven't had an problem, no one you know has had a problem, and you believe that such a minority of users have had problems that it is almost insulting to mention, why are you on this site?.

As i am having a problem, which my wife has had with her ipad, and one of my coworkers also has had with their ipad after the update, i believe that we must be three of the most unlucky people alive.

I will not be flying with the two of them in the same plane.  With what seems to be our collective extremely bad luck, the plane may crash if we are all together.

i love your passion and I am sure i would love you as i appreciate people who feel strongly about things and look for ways to fix the world around them.  That being said, it may be more useful to be passionate about some issues that may help humanity.  People came here to try to get solutions, not be lectured by an anonymous fellow apple user.

Your experiences are your experiences.  If you weren't happy with a car you purchased, and found out that many others (based on your own independent experiences with those with whom you have direct human contact) had the same issue, you may feel that there is a problem that should be addressed by the car maker.  I have a Lexus.  If you were upset about one of their products, i would hope that i would get offended enough to spend time sending you and others such long replies that tell them how silly it is for them to have their own opinion.

Again, i am sure that you are a great guy, but please don't lecture people who are already frustrated.

I apologize for any typos.  This was sent from my slow, lagging ipad, so its hard to tell.

Instead of coming here to single out my comments, have you even tried any of my lists of suggtested fixes, possible solutions and my modfied restore procedures?

    Hmmm?...

I provided useful and constructive solutions for every older iPad user who is having issues that come to these posts, to try.

I even go to the trouble of posting these fixes more than once.

I am not going to keep coming here arguing with users, like you.

Instead of focusing on my lists of possible fixes and solution, you chose to focus on my other comments, which are completely valid ones, whether you agree with them or not.

The fact remains that everyone that comes here with a major problem with ANY Apple mobile product or computer, those that come here are, somehow, vehemently convinced that their iPad issues are wide spread, worldwide issue, or it's some sort of Apple "conspiracy"  that Apple is out to "purposely" obsolete their older devices and force them to purchase a new device, which, is not the case, at all!

In case of the initial release of iOS 9.3, this was certainly the case, but that is the, occasional, exception and not the norm.

You can choose to try my advice for possible fixes for your iPad or not, but I am not going to continue replying to these types of replies or responses.

I am reporting your post to the moderators.

These forums are for troubleshooting issues and NOT social media to argue with users who come here a voluntarily choose to spend their time trying to help other Apple product users with their product issues without being attacked and ridiculed.

If you have a valid iPad trouble shooting issue that needs to be fixed or solved...fine.

But there is no other reason for you to post personal comments or attacks of other volunteer users here, myself included, who provide years of knowledge and experiences of Apple's product lines to those that are less knowledgeable.

    Good Luck.

Please be civil.  Insulting other users in post after post is not the way to go.  You are correct that this site is only for trying to solve problems.  That is why i am on here.  I have read many posts trying to find answers.  Insults and all caps wording is probably not how this site was designed to work.

i did try the fixes.  They happen to not have worked for me.  I tried almost all of them and it is very frustrating that an issue arose after the update that was never there before.  It really shouldn't upset you that much that people are frustrated with the products.  Helpful advice without extra commentary is probably how this site was designed to work.

I appreciate all the constructive advice you have given. I'm sure others have successfully benefited from it, they just didn't work for me.  Please do try to limit the extra insults though it detracts from the true benefit that you are providing to me and our fellow Apple users.

I Am sorry, but you are quite wrong. I am in computer heaven with my Surface pro and my Surface Book. They update without issue, the wifi works, and I have no problems with malware. Windows protects itself quite well, with just a little effort on my part (installing the updates), and it is beautiful to look at. Not only that, but I can customize it to look however I want (Window blinds). Now I have no issues with Apple at this time. In fact I am enjoying my new iPad pro, but I am under no delusions about how Apple does business. As for Windows, you don't need to attack Microsoft in order to justify your preference for Apple.

Thank you. This [reset settings] did not resolve the problem. Wife says "not so bad". But may need to try the full reinstall. Problem is we may not have enough space on iCloud and may need to purchase space. Good thing is this has drastically cut the amount of time kids use it. :-)
