Do I need an anti-virus programme for MacBookAir? OS X 10.10.5

We were using a MacBook Air ( OS X 10.6.8 ) for on line banking.

When signing in , there was a problem with our password sign in . Clicking on recover password , we were re-directed to a scam site that mimicked the bank web site.

The bank felt we have a virus.

Do we need an anti-virus programme , if so which one is recommended?

Thanks

Stewie

Macs do not get viruses.

I assume you have adware. Follow the instructions on this web page in order to manually remove adware from your mac: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203987

You may also find adware removal guide on this page http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-identification/

If you do not want to remove adware manually use this anti malware tool in order to scan and remove it: https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/mac/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=social

Download, open dmg file , and run it by clicking “Scan for Adware” button to remove adware.

Once done, quit the application and restart your mac.

How did you log in to your bank site? Did you click a link in an e-mail message? If so, that was a phishing e-mail, and didn't go to your real bank site. You may have just handed over your bank site password to scammers. Change that password immediately!

If you didn't click a link in an e-mail message, how did you get there? Through a bookmark in your browser that has been there for a long time? Through a Google search? By typing in the site's address?

We have book marked our bank log in site. This is what we used.

When there was a problem with passord , there is a "recover password " check off box which we clicked on.

Then it asked for age , and credit card info. ......which was entered.

We did contact the bank and they have cxld. the credit card. But they thought it was our problem , not theirs .

We have now downloaded and run Malware bytes on our desktop and 1 MacBookAir as well as adblock.

An earlier MacbookAir is not 10.7 , so will not run Malwarebytes.

Banks often try to blame the customer, but it's very unlikely that this was the result of any malware on your computer. It's far more likely that your network has been compromised somehow, and attempting to connect to your bank site actually redirected you elsewhere. (For the future, I doubt that any bank site has a password reset form that requires you to enter your full credit card number.)

To troubleshoot the network issue, see:

(Fair disclosure: I am affiliated with Malwarebytes.)
