Sep 17, 2015 4:58 AM in response to Obey_mcflurryby D.Cohen,Hope this article will help you:
iOS and OS X: Link your phone number and Apple ID for use with FaceTime and iMessage - Apple Support
If the steps from the aforementioned article don't work, try restarting/resetting your device. This won't delete your data stored on this device.
- Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button
- Press and hold on the Home button
- Keep holding both buttons until the display turns off and back on with Apple logo on it.
Alternatively, you may go to Settings - General - Reset - Reset All Settings

Sep 17, 2015 2:02 PM in response to D.Cohenby Onep3ice,I have this problem as well, And I live in an area with no service so iMessage is usually my saving grace but just like the above person my number is grayed out and has a little loading symbol next to it. Its been about 12 hours myself and I tried both you fixes and got nothing, I've also done a hard and soft reset to no avail.
