How do I stop my iPhone from storing music in the cloud?

Hi all,

Recently I've been experiencing an issue where I'll either a) purchase music from iTunes or b) add music from CD's I purchased, and when I sync music to my iPhone, it will apparently store this music in the cloud, so I have to stream it when I want to listen to it.

Erm...I don't want to stream it. I want my music stored on my IPHONE. Not in the cloud. I want to listen to this music when there's poor signal and no wifi.

Also, it won't let me download these songs, and they're greyed out and unplayable. Sometimes I will only be able to play one or two songs from a playlist because the rest are in the cloud 😠

Here is an example:

How can I fix this? I do not have either Apple Music or iTunes Match, and my phone is a 5S running iOS 8.1

So basically, you're telling me if I purchase music or iTunes identified it, it's going to be stored in the cloud and there's no way to change that???? And I just have to ignore it when I'm in an area with no data or cellular signal?? What a waste of money.

I used to keep all my music on my phone until I updated to iOS 8.1. Never had this problem until then. And now it randomly selects songs to store in the cloud and won't let me play them! What's up with that? Surely, there is a way to put it back in my phone's memory permanently. Btw, I purchased these songs on my computer iTunes, then synced them to my phone. And I do have cellular enabled for music.

I have yet to see a straight forward answer to this problem. I have the same issue with itunes loading my music into the cloud and having to download it to my ipod. I simply want ALL my music on my computer and when I sync to my ipod, I want ALL my music on my ipod,..NOT in the bloody cloud! Does anyone know how to completely shutdown the cloud so that people can have access to their music directly from their ipod or iphone?

Assuming you are syncing music via iTunes, you can turn off the ability to see tracks that are not actually downloaded: Settings app > Music > iCloud Music Library (turn OFF). In addition, any of these tracks you see "in the cloud" can also be downloaded to play rather than streamed. iTunes purchased tracks will always appear if the view is turned on; ripped and other tracks will only upload if you have turned the feature on in iTunes on your computer.

iTunes purchases have ALWAYS been available in the cloud. that's where you purchased them from to begin with. You can, as I explained earlier, set the Music app so it will not show them. There is also nothing "random" about it. ALL of your iTunes and App store purchases are available in the cloud to download when you choose. If you wish to sync the tracks to the device, yes, you do so using iTunes. Check your iTunes settings to make sure you are actually syncing what you think you are.

Hi All

I am also having some difficulty with the cloud, I know its been there all along but it seems to have become more intrusive lately. For example if I click on a track [at home on my PC or even mobile on my phone] I don't want iTunes to play tracks that are NOT found on the device, the PC or the Phone, Because on a phone [using my cellular data] this can be costly for people with limited data contracts, and if you'r not very observant you might not even be aware that iTunes is automatically fetching the track data for you, I know I can tell my phone to stop using cellular data for iTunes at all but that will cause other issues. I also don't want iTunes/Apple to supply me with a new copy of the track [but for different reasons], In this case my Wi-Fi data is unlimited so there is no added expense however when iTunes cant locate the original track, I want to know about it when a track can not be located by iTunes!
It seems to me that Apple is being kind to a fault in this case, being intrusive rather then helpful.... why?

Thanks for any info/advice anyone can offer.

What other issues? Settings> Music> Use Cellular Data> OFF has no impact other than music streaming or downloading.

In the Music app, if you go to My Music and tap the red pull-down (usually "Artist" but there are other choices) you'll see an option for "Only Downloaded Music", thus hiding stuff in the cloud and showing only items you've synced from iTunes (there's a similar setting in iTunes on your computer to hide items in the cloud).

Well helping me locate and disable only music on my phone might be just the thing I'm looking for..

"What other issues?" Well like someone else discussed in an earlier in this thread "You will only we able to download via WiFi unless you have the Music app set to use cellular (Settings App > Cellular > Music)." So unless I'm mistaken you can't buy new tracks it cellular data is disabled for the music app. And if it's enabled that's when it decides to download [or stream] tracks in your cloud but not on your phone.

In any case

Thanks for your input

Yes that's true, but not difficult to temporarily change in Setting for such times. You can safely leave this ON if you do the next step (see below).

No not necessarily. If you toggle the option within the Music app to only show you "Only Downloaded Music" then there's no way this will happen, see the second paragraph of my post above. Hiding iCloud music in this manner will prevent you from inadvertently tapping on them to start the streaming, so there's no way for this to happen.
