iPad 2 is bricked from iOS 9

I attempted to upgrade to iOS 9 today on my iPad2 and have been unable to complete the process. The first issue was getting stuck on the slide to upgrade screen, and getting no response from the slide gesture. After resetting, I was able to slide and a black Apple logo appeared with a grey/black progress bar. The bar fills up to about a third, before going back to the slide to upgrade screen. I am stuck in this loop. I have tried to reboot the device in recovery mode by holding the power and home buttons down, but the device just restarts back to the dreaded slide to upgrade screen. I have also connected to my PC and iTunes, but I get a prompt 'To allow access, please respond on your iPad', but again, all I have is the slide to upgrade screen. There must be some way to get out of this loop, as it is at least a soft brick. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Count me in the IOS 9 bricked Ipad club. I have a Ipad air 2 i made the mistake of trying to upgrade from 8.4.1 to IOS 9 now that its matured some, only to hit the brick wall of the apple garden.

It keeps freezing a few inches into the upgrade progress bar and now its stuck in recovery mode. I tried all the tricks but it wont go into DFU mode, every attempt to restore or upgrade results in "Unknown errors". Real helpful apple and thanks for the 500$ Paper weight I own now.

I am so ****** off Im calm about it. I've been searching google all night and trying everything i can find and still the same crap. It was working perfectly fine prior, so its a waste to throw it away and save up for a new one.

@LordRiker there is hope! The latest iOS 9.0.2 has a fix for iPads that bricked and couldn't be restored using the methods described earlier in this thread.

I took my iPad2 to an Apple Store, and they attached it to a MacBook with iTunes and bypassed a lot of the trouble I was having. In 20 minutes or so, it was updated and working fine. I also didn't lose any applications or data.

So don't throw in the towel (or your iPad out the window) until going to an Apple Store and seeing what they can do. It didn't even cost anything, since it's an iOS update.

Apple redeemed themselves somewhat on this... It's still disturbing they released a software update that caused so many people trouble. I'll be leery in the future, and do more user feedback instead of just hitting <Update>... But thank goodness it worked out.

Good luck!

I agree that the so called Geniuses at the apple Store can probably fix my iPad....

..

But I live in Phoenix, Arizona..... 35 Mile treck and wait for 4-9 hours in-line.

..

Haven't you heard - Apple is releasing new products...

..

I watched the morning show - people are lined up down the block...

...

Interesting thing is " they are lined up down the block to buy something that can be - Bricked - at any moment by a poorly initiated update to their IOS. Which may just coincide with a new Apple Product release - resulting in spending the whole day in-line"...

...

I am tossing my iPad and we are converting all the iPads at work to tablets. (Since I make the IT Purchases, I think it prudent to convert to mobile devices that can be recovered when they crash).

..

Heaven help the workplace should crash and be held hostage as I am.

..

Since Apple is not available to fix the problems when they occur - we are migrating to a device that is supported.

...

NOTE: I realize that this is a "user" forum. And I also realize that my post will be reviewed and "removed" by Apple. After all, they do not monitor this forum to gauge support. But "they do" monitor and delete selected posts.

...

Violation of the User Forumn Agreement... as I understand it.

...

Just like the US Government has suspended Constitutional Rights to "protect our Citizens right to live as Americans.... It all boils down to perception. Which is jaded when you consider that any one entity can tout fredom of exchange (yet neglect to respond or even consider their mistakes as mistakes).

...

Apple Techs keep their heads buried in the sand so they do not have to admit any mistakes )much like our "paid for Congressional and Senators" imn Washington, DC.

...

OK Gang - Rant s over..

..

It would be nice if Apple actually had a recovery option to fix my problem that didn't involve having to quit my job to get done...

..

But then "World Peace" would be nice too... but that taint gonna happen any time soon...

Another bricked iPad 2 iOS 9.0.2 owner here, stuck at connect to iTunes screen

I've tried the following variations based upon different errors, all with the *same* result

1) tried both an iMac and Macbook Pro (both running Yosemite, then tried upgraded iMac to El Capitan, same results)

2) different cables

3) tried iOS 9.01, which WORKED! but just for one day, then it reverted back to connect to iTunes screen by the next day?

4) tried updating using iMac ethernet then wireless, no change

5) error status codes differed, 21, 3194, 4013

6) iOS 8.4.1 was rock solid before 9 (ok at first), 9.0.1 was able to recover fine when first displaying itunes, then bricked hard with 9.0.2

I read about Wondershare Fone, appears promising....though $80 seems a bit high when the text of the "Fix iOS" implies a jailbreak that can be restored to pre-jailbreak state....I just want Apple to fix 9.0.2 with 9.0.4 or 9.1

Sigh...

I'm a stockholder in apple and not enthused about this problem (which, admittedly, only affects models that are five generations old). I am currently wondering why AAPL has not issued any software repair or upgrade to fix this problem. It comes from using a replacement part in the thing that wasn't bought from apple, at least in my case. So that's what the problem is, apparently. My screen was broken and i asked the guy to put in a new battery while he was changing the screen...and then a couple of weeks later I got code 53 messages from iTunes every time i tried to restore/reinstall the new ios9. Code 53 means logic board is not detecting apple equipment signatures in components.

Unfortunately nobody at apple customer service knew that or could help me find someone who did...went to the genius bar and was told what a code 53 meant, and that i had two choices...I could throw it away or i could trade it in on a new iPad. I didn't do either, and am still waiting for a response from Apple about this debacle, which truly makes me feel bad about owning their stock. Maybe nobody at apple uses ipad2--but i expected some solution to be forthcoming from them, since their software update broke my iPad.

Since our earlier post, we bought a NEW cable from the Apple store and Apple released iOS 9.1.

So, the new cable eliminated error 3194. Now it is very consistently failing with 21 and 4013 (DFU recovery mode).

iOS 9.1 didn't fix this problem at all as far as we can tell.

We've also wiped a Macbook Pro's OS drive, then a fresh El Capitan OS install, went through all the updates, didn't restore any previous bits from a Time Machine backup, then crossed our fingers....results are, SSDD (same s**t different day)....drat!

So the only consistent factors are 1) from our same home internet connection AT&T u-verse 2) same iMac and Macbook Pro 3) same iPad 4) iOS 9.

The ~/Library/Logs/iPadUpdate X.log file contains this snippet, as if we yanked the cable out mid restore...?

^@[21:22:03.8897] <Recovery Mode Device 0x60800014c970>: Recovery mode succeeded

^@[21:22:03.8898] Finished Recovery Restore Phase: Successful

^@[21:37:04.5909] Recovery mode device disconnected

^@[21:37:04.5909] Device removed when in state Restoring, moving device to transition state

Further, we looked at the /var/log/system.log finding this interesting tidbit that repeats a few times during the restore attempt, "Oct 29 22:02:56 imac iTunes[1621]: tid:44027 - Can't handle disconnect with invalid ecid

Just speculating, I wonder if somehow iOS9.x screwed up iPad 2's ecid authorized list? (per Wikipedia, (possibly standing for Exclusive Chip ID or Electronic Chip ID) is an identifier unique to every unit.

We may try getting a genius bar appointment where Apple may have more tools (software) to diagnose the issue. I'm still of the opinion its iOS as 8.4.1 was just fine before upgrading to 9.x

Dude, you are a godsend. My boss' daughter gave me her iPad2 to update from iOS 4 to iOS 9 and I thought it would be quick and easy, but it bricked and then the same thing happened to me! I took it into the Genius Bar and the guy who "helped" me plugged it in twice to do the restore and it didn't work either time and was just like, "yeah, Ive seen that happen to a bunch of those, sorry. A replacement would cost around $200. It's probably some hardware fault that wasn't uncovered until the new update." and just left it bricked.

I downloaded the free trial and connected it to "restore from iOS device" function and it's back to normal, thank god. Didn't feel like shelling out the money to replace the iPad since I felt responsible for bricking it. I wonder if I take it into the Apple Store meow, if they would be able to do something... My guess is no, given I just tried to upgrade again and it failed/bricked, but it would be fun to see them feel somewhat responsible for the bricking this time around.

Have you found any luck upgrading since?

My experience :-

How I fixed my iPad 2 brick

See summary at the end if you want to see quickly see what to do.

See the latest news about my problems in the update at the end of this post.

I have had my iPad 2 for nearly five years now and find certain aspects of it great. For instance I can turn it on and check email within a few seconds. I can use FaceTime to chat to my family that are over 10,000 miles away. I can carry it about reasonably easily (certainly within the home) and the battery lasts a long time.

It does have snags though. Very limited internal memory that cannot be expanded. My iPad is 32gb and I am always having to delete things to make space for something new. The Ipad Operating System (IOS) makes it very hard to do some things like move files around or save them. In fact the list of things that it will not let you do is so long that I have a powerful Windows laptop that I use most of the time. I only use the iPad for certain tasks where I want portability and some dedicated IOS apps.

Last week in an idle moment, I made a schoolboy error. I got suckered into an IOS update on my iPad. I was running IOS 7.something and the iPad was doing everything that I wanted, so there was no need to update it. I have been caught out before where Apple and Microsoft and Google talk about bug fixes and enhancements when in fact often the update removes functionality in order to encourage you to have a 'paid for' feature.

I did not need to do it but I stupidly went for the update IOS option on my iPad. It was upgrading to version 9. I should have remembered that a lot of version 9 functionality is intended for the very latest Apple iPad hardware and would do nothing for my old hardware other that make it run slower, use more battery and stop some apps altogether.

I was using the over the air method where it gets the update from the Apple website via my wifi connection. It took ages, but apparently downloaded the update file successfully before starting the actual device update process. I watched the snail slow progress bar creep across the screen and much later when it seemed to be about 98% of the way across it just stopped. No error messages or anything. Just stalled. Hours later I realised that it definitely was failed. So I restarted the iPad and of course it then came up with an error and showed an image indicating that I needed to connect the now dead iPad to a computer running iTunes.

So at this point my fully working hardware was about as useful as a brick without software.

I sought help online and then connected the dead iPad to iTunes running on a PC. I tried the iPad recovery feature many times but every time it failed and Apple did not provide any useful error messages to give me a clue as to what the problem was. At each attempt it was downloading a file (taking ten minutes) only to fail applying the file.

I googled for help.

Did I have the latest version of iTunes ?, no, so get the latest version. There was not enough free disk (SSD) space to update to the latest iTunes version. Eventually I made space and got iTunes fully up to date. It made no difference, the update still failed to make the brick into something useful.

More googling for help.

Apparently you can download all the various iPad software versions in the form of IPSW files. If you hold down the Shift key while clicking on Update in the iTunes - Ipad recovery screen, then it lets you select a previously downloaded IPSW file. You can get the IPSW files from the IPSW.me website. I tried to go back to IOS v7.2 but it kept failing. The error message was another total red herring. I discovered this by trying all the different suggestions, eg changing the 'hosts' file, but everything failed.

Subsequently I found out that Apple do something called signing. They only sign the latest version of IOS. The signing checks that you have a valid Apple iPad. They will not sign old versions of IOS so you either have to use that latest signed version or have an expensive brick as a paperweight.

So Apple will not let you go back to a previous working IOS version on your iPad.

I tried again, and downloaded the latest IOS version. You have to be careful to get the correct download for your particular iPad hardware. There are many different models out there.

Then with the iPad connected to iTunes running on my PC, I went into the iPad recovery screen and used shift/Restore to let me choose the latest download. It actually worked. It took ages, but having spent 12 hours of time and hundreds of megs of downloads, it got my iPad back to a working device with IOS 9.2.

I was able to recover some of it's previous setup from an iCloud backup. However, although this re installed placeholders for my apps, the actual apps were not there and these had to be downloaded all over again. Another handful of hours and hundreds of megs of downloads later, and my iPad 2 was working again. I did have to go through the initial setup procedure all over again and of course 'Activate' the device via the Apple website.

It was now just a case of working out which apps needed updated again to work with IOS 9.2 and which apps had been lost altogether. In some cases I could find another app or later version to replace my lost functionality.

Phew, that was hard work. Best of luck if you have to do it.

Moral

Avoid IOS updates at all cost. They will probably fail, be unsuitable for your old hardware, slow things down, use more battery and lose functionality.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Summary

If your iPad has failed an IOS update and shows an icon indicating that you need to connect to iTunes, try the following :-

It is just possible by doing multiple iPad restarts by holding the Home button and Power on button until the Apple icon shows, it may fix the problem. In my case it did not work.

1) Run iTunes (preferably a recent version) on a computer.

2) Connect the iPad to a USB port on the computer. iTunes should detect the iPad, and realise that it is dead and take you to the iPad recovery screen.

3) Try clicking on the Update button and then follow the instructions that will download (slowly) the software from Apple and attempt to install it.

4) If that fails you could try the Restore button but be aware that this destroys any data on your iPad and you will need a backup from somewhere or else be willing to start from scratch with an empty iPad.

5) If both 3) and 4) fail you could try acting upon the advice given in the error messages. (in my case they were total red herrings).

6) If still struggling download the latest version of IOS for your particular iPad hardware from the ipsw.me website. Then when using the iTunes iPad recovery screen click shift/Update and then select the ipsw file that you have downloaded. Hopefully this will work. If you have to use shift/Restore you will lose all previously stored data on the iPad (as I did) and need to recover it from a backup if you have one. Sometimes iCloud is backing up your iPad even though you may not have actively asked it to do so.

Best of luck.

Peewit. By the way, I hate iTunes.

Update

Just when I thought everything was working.

No, Apple are really making me suffer over my simple mistake.

Now that I have IOS 9.2 (because Apple will not let me roll back my iPad 2 to IOS 7.2), I have found that my Apple TV will no longer do mirroring from my iPad.

I had just downloaded the first episode of the new BBC drama "War and Peace" to my iPad. I use a proxy server and the BBC iPlayer to download it. Although I am in Australia, the proxy server makes the iPlayer think that I am in the UK. I used a couple of tricks that I have learnt so I could download the tv program in five minutes instead of the usual hour plus.

Anyway, back to the plot. I was settling down to watch "War and Peace" via my Apple TV but I could not get the mirroring (where the tv shows what is on your iPad) to work. Back to Google search on my PC and it seems that if you have IOS 9 on your iPad then mirroring with Apple TV will only work if you have the latest software on your Apple TV unit.

Some poor s*d discovered this when he was at a conference and about to do a presentation using his Apple TV.

So here I was, back into another session of getting the Apple TV to do a software update with slow downloading, followed by multiple progress bars while it extracts the downloaded file, then updates the box in multiple stages, each with it's own slow progress bar. Finally I was able to watch the program.

I am sure that it would be more fun and quicker to actually read "War and Peace" that have to do all this fiddling just to get back the functionality that I had previously.

I wonder what other surprises are in store for me now that I am lumbered with IOS 9.

So disappointed with Apple right now... 😟

I had 9.0.2 installed and kept having the alerts to update to 9.2.1 and ignored it for a couple of months when finally decided to update iOS it just bricked.

Went to an official support centre and they just told me it's an hardware fault and that some components don't work at all with the daily usage but when updating iOS they're put to work - BS!!!!

280€ to replace it for a new one (still iPad 2)! Bah!

Tried everything to restore it but nothing yet. Even tried with 9.3 beta but...

If iPad2 for some reason doesn't support the new versions of iOS, just stop allowing it to upgrade. ****!

Will complain with Apple directly. Doesn't make sense at all.
