Connecting to Windows share by Windows network formatted path

I have MacBookPro with Yosemite (but will upgrade to the latest OS as get available).

In my company most people using Windows PC. They are sending paths to Windows shared folders in Windows network format: \\domain\share-name\path. Outlook recognizes them and presents as URL link (blue underlined clickable). However clicking on the link doesn't make Mac to connect. Instead it complains that "The file ///domain/share-name/path cannot be found".

I can use it by reformatting it into smb://domain/share-name/path. Is it a way to make Mac understand this format and connect to the share by click on the path?
