I am a student that frequently downloads pdfs, .docx, .pptx from safari on my iphone and ipad to save to apps. ios 9 doesn't seem to support the download of .ppt anymore. Safari will open it, but there is no option to open them in other apps anymore. Am I missing something?

Im having the same problem. Does anyone know what we can do about it? I bought an iPad air 2 to take nots in class with and now i can't even use it?!

What program(s) are you using to view these files?
Each file you save to the device needs to have an App that can open it.
The iCloud drive could be an exception to this. But then again it's not on the device.

I am having having the same problem. It occurs for me when I tap on a docx. link in Safari. Unlike in IOS8, I am now unable to open said link in Pages. This was previously done via a menu at the top of the page a la the one used to ad pdf documents to iBooks.
I found a solution:
Download Mercury Web Browser Pro from the App Store (it's free). Open your PowerPoint in the browser. Once it has been opened, a message at the top of the screen will ask you if you want to download it. Select download. Then go to the browser's setting (a button at the right top of the screen - the one with three horizontal lines). Then click on files. Your document will be there. Select your document. Your document will open and at the top right of the screen there will be a button (a box with an upwards arrow). Select that, and that will give you the option to open your document in another app. 
Although that seems like an option, I don't want a third party, potentially unsafe, app to do what Safari is supposed to do.
i'm having the same problem as well. i put all my school files in my ipad. right now with ios 9 not supporting .ppts it's basically useless to me at the moment. hopefully they fix it soon!
Ive been having the same issue since the betas. I hoped they would have brought it back in the final release, but it seems they havent.
Have The same problem. This as made my iPad really inconvenient for work.
adding to that I can't even open a keynote document in keynot from safari any more.... Only save to ibooks which doesn't help much at all.
Same issue here, I work at a K-12 school and many of our students have updated their devices to iOS 9 and are now unable to download resources and attachments from our online portal. This is going to cause a major headache for our teachers as students will not be able to complete assignments and access class materials.
I'm going to contact our Apple education rep to see if they are aware of the issue or have a workaround...

Nope. A senior tech advisor for the iWork app suite knows about the problem, but I imagine we have to wait until the next update. This is a real hassle for sure.
I was having this same problem trying to get a PowerPoint over to notability while sitting class. There's no simple "open in" like there was before. So I just came across this app called Documents by Readdle it's actually an awesome file managing app and it let me open the PowerPoint in notability. Guess I will just roll with this for now
