A number of emails I receive are too wide to fit onto my screen even if I reduce the font size by means of the 'Smaller' button in the toolbar. But the preview pane on the left is wider than necessary; if I could make it narrower, it would improve the fit of the message pane on the screen. Is there a way of doing this?

Thanks, dominic23, but that is, of course, the first thing to try. Many emails still do not fit into the message pane, which entails irritating and time-wasting sliding to and fro at the end and beginning of each line of text.
What does help is to go to Mail > Prefs. > Viewing and select 'Use classic layout'. That loses the left-hand preview pane altogether. But unfortunately I prefer the other layout!
Ah ha! But your suggestion, dominic23, has made me experiment some more. If I slide the other dividing line — that between the mailbox list and the preview pane — to the left, the mailbox list can be made to disappear. Or the shortcut Shift + Cmd + M has the same effect. And that does help. Thanks for making me experiment.
If you haven't tried this already, move the mouse pointer to the divider line and drag it to the left.
