iCloud Backup Broken After iOS 9 Upgrade

iCloud Backup on both my iPhone and iPad have been working fine for years until I upgraded to iOS 9. After the upgrade it said my latest backup was "Never". When I pressed "Backup Now" the progress bar flashed quickly then went back to saying my latest backup was "Never" (no error messages).

I decided to try turning iCloud Backup off and back on again. When I try to turn in on it says "iCloud Backup Failed. There was a problem enabling iCloud Backup.".

Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix?

iPhone 6, iOS 9

why doesn't iphone do an update that would fix these numbers for everyone?

I would like very much that everyone used Google DNS, their servers so far for years proved to be superior to any, but I am afraid that to enforce any Apple device to use specific DNS system would contradict Apple's approach to protection of our privacy. I don't think they will go for that.

THANK YOU! Finally able to backup 4 iphones on 4 different icloud accounts that haven't been able to backup in Icloud or itunes since iOS 9 since early september! Have tried every single other thing all over the internet and iOS Console showed the prob. It was snapchat on 2 phones and random apps on the other 2 phones.

Were there any other steps you had to go through before changing the DNS worked?

I know that you asked above question to "leventv". Since "leventv" 's solution worked for me perfectly. I thought that I will share what I did exactly before changing my default DNS servers to Google DNS servers. First of all I want to inform you that I had this problem (not being able to do either manual or automatic iCloud backups), since I upgraded my both iPhone and iPad to iOS 9.1 from iOS 8.4. I want to report today that: since I changed my DNS servers on my iPhone and iPad to Google DNS servers, I had two successful automatic backups, and three successful manual backups in a row on my iPad and iPhone. So, I am hundred percent for sure that this Google DNS fix works for me 🙂.

What I did before changing to Google DNS servers ? I did exactly what you did. But it did not work. What did the trick for me, was: After changing DNS to Google DNS, I signed out (logout) from iCloud completely, and after that I signed in (login) to iCloud again. After, I rebooted iPad, I tried manual iCloud backup again, and this time it worked. Since then, it is working perfectly with no problem. So, I suggest you to try logout iCloud, and login to iCloud again, and try manual iCloud backup again. I hope this helps. If not helps, may be this is related to where you locate, or who is your ISP ? May be giving a call to your ISP (Internet Service Provider), asking them if they are aware of this issue, will help too.

This Google DNS fix to iCloud backup problem rocks !!! (for me)

PS. "fromsouth" 's solution on page:18, also works too. I tried his solution before I found this topic on this forum. But it did not work for me, when I setup my iPad as a New iPad instead of restoring from an old backup. When I restored my iPad from and old backup, it also restore my old DNS servers settings (which were Google DNS servers) too. By the way, I always use Google DNS servers in the past and now on all of my Apple devices. For your info, automatic iCloud backups are done every 24 hours (so only 1 automatic iCloud backup in 24 hours).

Thanks to "leventv" again, for being a messenger to Apple Support, for this wonderful DNS change fix.😉

Thank you for the extra tip.

When I tapped the Sign Out button for iCloud I received a notice that doing so would clear out my ApplePay cards, clear out my iCloud Photo Library and iCloud Drive. Since I don't have an iCloud Backup to restore those I thought best to ask you first: did all that come back when you signed back in to iCloud?

I don't know if those same things would be resto from my manual backup. I presume so, but since the Sign Out message kind of freaked me out a little I figured I should ask about your experience.

Thanks!

Yes you are right. All of that data will be erased from your iPhone or iPad. They are only erased from your device, but they are still on iCloud. That is the beauty of iCloud. They are all restored back to your device once sign in back to iCloud. Don't worry, they are all safe. Only thing, I don't know is: Apple Pay credit cards. May be you need to enter them manually again. They(emails, notes, safari data, contacts, my photo stream, reminders, calendars) all came back to my device, once I signed in back to iCloud. Also your iCloud Photo Library is in iCloud, It may take some time to download your photos to your device depending on your size of your library. Same for your iCloud drive, all data are in cloud and safe.

Manual backup is same as iCloud backup, only difference is: one is in cloud, other is in your computer. So you already have a solid backup on your MBP.

Hello everyone,

I've been following this topic for a while now and decided to register. Unfortunately I still couldn't find a working solution for my iCloud to finally backup. I already tried every solution proposed on this thread and not even the DNS change helped. I don't have problems in deleting the old iCloud backups or backing up manually on my mac through iTunes. It just won't finish the backup (automatic or manually enforced) to iCloud.

Does anyone knows if Apple is aware and dealing with this situation? I am hoping for an update to fix it... This is really bad. And I am also aware of other people with the same problem (just not that eager to solve it as I am).

Best,

Alexandre
