Oct 1, 2015 9:23 PM in response to leJuan5150by ar dal,This worked for me. I couldn't back up to iCloud on 2 of my devices ( iPhone 6s iOS 9.0.2 ) "This backup could not be completed" was displayed every time I attempted to Backup.
IMPORTANT : if you have an access to a computer, back up your device to iTunes first. Just in case something goes wrong.
Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage storage > select your device backup (that you're having problem backing up) DELETE IT.
Go back to iCloud > Backup > press Back Up Now, you're good to go.

Oct 2, 2015 9:04 PM in response to ephemeral761by Romany16,Updated to 9.0.2 reset network settings, hard reset phone, shut off backup, turned on backup, attempted to delete non-existent 0kb backup (iOS says it can't delete) still won't back up.
Apple have any plans to fix this?

Oct 3, 2015 3:40 AM in response to Romany16by opclive,I'm with you Romany16 - I followed all these steps and actually got it to backup to iCloud once, but now the same message is back saying I can't back up to iCloud. I spoke at length to a third Apple Senior Tech who has me do a combination reset I had never done before and basically wipe the phone and start from scratch, but that didn't work either. I have a call in to the tech explaining it didn't work. Hugely frustrating but hopefully iOS 9.1 will be pushed ASAP.

Oct 3, 2015 8:10 AM in response to opcliveby Jonathan Migdow,HI. I also have not been able to back up to iCloud since the I OS 9.02 update. I tried all the steps that you did with no success. Have you had any resolution since your post?

Oct 3, 2015 8:13 AM in response to Jonathan Migdowby opclive,I spoke at length to a third Apple Senior Tech who had me do a combination reset I had never done before and basically wipe the phone clean and start from scratch, but that didn't work either. I have a call in to the tech explaining it didn't work and after promising to stick with me on this 48 hours has passed without a response. Hugely frustrating but hopefully iOS 9.1 will be pushed ASAP. I am also having push notification problems with mail, so all in all I am not that impressed with Apple's response to this. I'll post in here when / if the apple tech responds.

Oct 3, 2015 10:40 PM in response to opcliveby samfink,Still recommending that no one try these remedies....none of them work consistently. The problem is Apple's and will need to be fixed in a future update. At best you will waste a lot of time on the phone with Apple Support...at worst you will lose your data. As far as I know, all of our phones can still be backed up via iTunes backup, and that is an acceptable solution until Apple gets their act together.

Oct 3, 2015 11:53 PM in response to samfinkby JuSTBLeSSeD,YES, I agree with Sam. I have been working on this for 2 days and did EVERY single thing everyone posted here and nothing FIXES the issue. And to confirm, I got a higher level apple rep on the phone, who FINALLY admitted its still an issue in 9.0.2 and being real with me, told me their continuing to work on a fix forntjennedt update.

Oct 4, 2015 1:31 AM in response to samfinkby Papaylan,I agree that Apple is still working on this issue. An engineer from Apple US had even called me (I live in Paris) to get me send him a log of what happens on my iPhone when backup fails. But fortunately to me (or unfortunately to him), my issues were fixed by themselves (with a little help from myself) before he called, so I was no use for him.
I still have another issue, probably linked with this one, but he refused to look at it and forwarded me to Apple Care to open another case: an old backup made by an old iPhone 5 under iOS 8.4.1 (which I have sold) which is invisible, nowhere to be found, but is still there to eat up 40% of my free 5Go on iCloud.

Deleting and restoring problematic backups works. I did it on my 3 devices all running IOS 9.0.2.

Oct 5, 2015 3:21 AM in response to JuSTBLeSSeDby kidultlife,I have the update 9.0.2 and neither the automatic backup nor the manual backup work.
I have tried a few things suggested by other users here but nothing fixes the automatic backup. The only way I can get the manual backup to work, is to delete the backup already on the phone every single time. Somehow, it has to have an empty slot to backup on since the new update won't let it "overwrite" an existing backup.
Hope Apple can fix this issue soon so I can just plug the phone in at night and then have it backed up as usual instead of these annoying issues.

Oct 5, 2015 5:27 AM in response to kidultlifeby theone3388,I have tried a few of the suggestions posted, but without success. I have upgraded to 9.02. My problems is I cannot delete backup because I cannot see it -- ever since I upgraded to 9.0, I keep getting "Backup: Never" when I try to back up manually. If I go to Manage Storage, it does not give the option to "Delete backup" (as has been suggested). Any ideas, other than waiting for apple to announce a fix? Thanks

Oct 5, 2015 6:59 AM in response to kidultlifeby jazcan,After deleting backups several times & turning off & on iCloud backup, all three of my devices are finally backed up. My iPad 2 & iPhone 5 were easy to fix & are now automatically backing up again. After several weeks, I was finally able to do a manual backup for my iPad Air 2. I'm not sure whether a particular app was causing the problem or whether the problem was with iCloud. When selecting what to backup, the total backup said it was going to be 706 MB. When I checked this morning, the backup was 9.1 GB so there is definitely something off in calculating the size of backups & space in iCloud.

Oct 6, 2015 5:25 PM in response to leJuan5150by DDV,I was having the same problem: With iOS 9.0.x any attempt to back up the device to iCloud would result in the error:
The last backup could not be completed
I tried the numerous suggestions, turning off backups, logging out of iCloud, rebooting, upgrading, etc. and nothing would work. Finally, the solution came after I installed an app called "iOS Console" which enabled me to look at my iOS [iPhone] device logs while backing up the device. This led me to the following error (cryptic, but I'm an I.T. guy and I was able to decipher it):
Oct 6 16:13:41 Stinson backupd[242] <Warning>: WARNING: Handling save error for record <CKRecordID: 0x125f5b310; F:A3998E3A-5816-4267-B3C8-427C892942DB:N+ou0zGt//g+H727vBruGFj9dng=:101438000:+ 7Kk:(_defaultZone:__defaultOwner__)>: <CKError 0x127031c10: "Asset File Modified" (17/3003); "Saving asset failed">

You'll notice the path "AppDomainGrou-group.com.facebook.Facebook:…" in the error. It appear as though a corrupted (or otherwise unreadable) Facebook preference file or bundle was preventing the backup.
I simply deleted the Facebook app, and was able to backup my device after doing so.
I hope this helps you solve your iOS 9 backup issues. Note, it may not be Facebook that's causing the problem. You may have to look at your own device logs to determine which app is causing the problem.

Oct 6, 2015 6:57 PM in response to leJuan5150by bgkarma,I am still having this problem. I have read every post on this thread and tried everything, to no avail. As of today, having upgraded to the 9.1.4 PB, I was hoping for the best, but sadly the Automatic and Manually backups still don't work. This has been an issue for me since early August.
I hope Apple finally gets this issue taken care of!
