HI since I updated my 4s and 5s phones I can't respond to texts. The area where you type in the text is grey and has 0:00 in it. The only way around it is to create a new text and send it but the gey box returns as soon as its sent. Appreciate any help
Did you already check the settings, to make sure that your phone number is selected under Settings/Messages/Receive at/ ?
Can you send and receive iMessages?
Did you already reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again?
You will not lose data by resetting.
I Don't use imessage as my daughter uses it on my account. I did reset it earlier but it happened again this evening. Im unsure about your first point as I don't see that option.
Sorry, the option to receive text messages via mail address is only given when iMessage is active. In your case your phone number is selected automatically.
If your daughter uses iMessage on her phone, using your account info, make sure that your phone number is not selected in her iMessage settings on her device.
No checked and neither number is selected on her phone.Its a mystery as had no issue until I updated both phones with iOS 9
Did you already try the reset?
What happens if she deactivates iMessage on her device, can you send text after that?
Did you check for carrier updates?
Yes tried the reset and checked carrier settings. Switched off imessage on her phone and switched back on so both phones allowing me to text for now. Will keep a check and hope it's problem solved,thanks for your help.

I am having this issue too with the gray box blocking the text box area. Apple, please fix this. It is difficult to text if you can't see what you texting. It is possible that it is a glitch. However, it is frustrating for many customers. Thank you, I appreciate it. 🙂
you go to settings under messages. You activate subjectline and it will go away. This is a bug in IOS 9
Is that subject field by any chance. Another issue I having is all the calls I make on the 4s also show on my call register on two other phones under the same Apple ID.
Turning on message subject field worked for me.
you get messages on all devices where you are logged in with your appleID because iMessages is enabled.
Just disable iMessages on your iphone4s and then the messages sent/received on this device will not appear on others

Yes I understand that,what I meant is all calls made and received on my 4s also showed up on my other phone plus my wife's phone.
