Automatic backup of my iPad Air 2 stopped

The automatic backup via WiFi on my iPad Air 2 stopped a couple of months ago, in spite of the fact that I lock it and plug it in every night. Any suggestions?

iPad Wi-Fi + 4G (Verizon), Mac OS X (10.7.3)

I'll ask the obvious (as you did not mention it) but do you have iCloud Backup enabled under:

Settings/iCloud/Backup/iCloud Backup?

Do you have enough available iCloud storage space to hold the backup?

iCloud Backup is enabled and was working fine until July 23rd. Then, when I connected the iPad to iTunes to do a complete backup on my iMac before installing iOS9, I just happened to notice that there hadn't been an iCloud backup since July.
