I can export images at 300 dpi in iPhoto but not in photo. Where can I change from 72 dpi to 300 dpi in the new photo?

iPhoto lets me export at "Maximum" and the images read in preview at 300 dpi.

Any images and any way I export in photo, the info always reads 72 dpi.

300 is required for the art competitions and publications I use.

Again it is not a setting but a math forumula

and you can not "set" it in Photos nor could you in iPhoto

In Preview I believe you can change the setting but that will change absolutely nothing at all about the image or how it prints or what you can do with it

And based on your comment you clearly do not know what DPI is - and apparently the people you are sending you photos to have no idea either

a 2400 pixel x 3000 pixel photo printed as an 8" x 10" print is printed at 300 DPI no matter if the EXIF setting is 1 dpi or 72 dpi or 300 dpi or 2,000,000 dpi - and a 1200 pixel x 1500 pixel image printed as an 8" x 10" print is still 150 dpi no matter what setting the EXIF field says - the setting is totally immaterial - the math gives the answer

If I point to a red car and tell you it is black it is still red no matter what I said - likewise the DPI is set by the math no matter what the EXIF says

DPI is a calculation not a setting - Dots per inch (as you remember from fifth grade math "per" is another word for divide by) so to get DPI you take the Dots (pixels) and divide (per) by inches of the print - the answer is the DPI of that print - while there is a DPI files in the EXIF/IPTC data it is meaningless since the DPI of a print is the mathematical answer to the equation Pixels divided by inches - it is not a setting

Thankyou for your quick reply Larry.

Having worked in the print industry for many, many years, I know what dpi is.

The standards for any print publication I have been involved with is 300 dpi

There IS a setting in iPhoto (export>JPEG quality > maximum) which will export the image at 300 dpi

If I export JPG quality at medium in iPhoto the image info reads 72 dpi

I cannot find this setting in photo and yet cannot submit images that read 72 dpi

Is there a print size that your image will be printed at? If so then multiply the print size dimensions by 300 and give them an image with that many pixels in each direction, i.e. for a 10 x 12 print give them an image of 3000 x 3600 pixels.

If you export at any quality level the dpi will be reported at 72 as that's what Photos uses to display the image on the monitor. If the original file shows a different dpi when taken then exporting the image's original file out of Photos will give you the same DPI.

Since you're in the industry you must have a 3rd party image editor that you can use to reset the apparent dpi to 300 after you export it out of Photos.
