right after I send a text the text box goes gray and has 0:00 on it and when you type you can't see the text. You can hit return twice and it bumps the gray box up... then you can see what you're typing... what the deuce? I've tried enabling and disabling dictation etc. no change...
help? Thank you in advance!

I rebooted the Iphone twice, the problem is still here.
I just found something : go to settings, messages, and turn on the numbers of characters. It worked for me.
Did the reboot... it came back.... did the number of character thing... came back... I did notice it occurs right after you change the phone orientation... vertical to horizontal... etc... while texting. I'm sure they have a bug update for it. Eventually
Turn off "raise to listen" in your message settings.
Still comes back
how do you get to that selection?
Go to settings, then messages, scroll down until you see the listen button and turn it off.
I have had the same problem. I have tried all the solutions listed here multiple times and I have tried a good old fashioned ''turn it on and off again''. It has to be a bug and I only hope the fix comes out very very soon
I did this and the character count just now and the problem went away🙂 Thank you! Now lets hope it stays fixed AND they fix the bug.
Had the same issue, gray bar on the text area with 0:00
To make it go away start a new text message with an Iphone contact
Hold the microphone (right of text field) let go after a second or two
Tap the X on the left hand side
Thanks for this. The only thing that worked - simple and easy. It was just greyed out waiting for audio input, I guess.

I had the same issue after updating my iPhone 4s. Another user mentions disabling the raise to ear function and that got read of it for me.
