How do I change the admin password for iMac 10.6.8?

My older brother gave me his iMac 10.6.8, but he can't remember the admin password. I've been using this computer for a few months or so, but without the password, I can't update anything, especially any internet browsers, and I can't get applications like Microsoft Word or anything. It's a very old computer, but I don't have the money to buy a new one, and I don't have the disk to wipe it properly. I would like to change the admin password, but without the disk, how is that even possible? Please help ASAP!

Resetting or changing a password:

For Snow Leopard or earlier: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274

For Lion or later: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6022

This is also useful:

If it's running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, insert a Mac OS X install DVD, restart with the Option key held down, click on it, and use the Reset Password utility.
