how to tell what apps contribute to documents and data?

Hello,

I've amassed nearly 3Gb of "Documents and Data"

I understand this is tied into certain apps, and the only way (correct me if I'm wrong) to remove the data is to delete the app manually and re-install it? But how do I tell which apps are contributing most to the documents and data?

Surely not guess?
