older iPod shuffle not recognized on new mac

Trying to sync my older iPod shuffle (first generation) to my MacBook Air. I have successfully migrated my iTunes library to the new macbook. When I connect the iPod the mac does not recognize it in iTunes. It shows up as a remote disk in the finder.
