iOS 9 wifi connectivity problems

I have two typically frequented wireless networks. The network at my house, and the network at my university. My personal network is encrypted using WPA2-Personal over both 2.4GHz, and 5GHz via 802.11ac. My university uses WPA2-Enterprise over a similar protocol. After updating to iOS 9, neither my iPhone 6 plus, nor iPad Air 2 can consistently connect to the university's wireless network. I noticed that resetting the network settings temporarily solved the problem on my iPhone, and it was able to connect for a few hours; but has never solved the problem on my iPad. When I left for about an hour, and came back to the university, my iPhone again could not connect to the internet; and my iPad following suit. Two outcomes are occurring: either after the encryption key is submitted, the iPhone doesn't acknowledge anything besides asking for the encryption key again; or it says incorrect passcode. It would appear as though the encryption key handoff is either timing out, or incompatible with the network. Most likely, iOS 9 has inadvertently lost support for specific types of 802.11x networks, or it's simply a bug.

Note:

  • I have confirmed the encryption key by disconnecting, and reconnecting on my MacBook Pro: to rule out the possibility the passphrase has changed.
  • Re-Booted both devices
  • Cycled Wifi (turned off, and back on)
  • Reset the network settings on both devices.
  • Soft-Reset (Holding down the power and home buttons) on both devices.

Because both devices had trouble simultaneously it is hardly likely that it is a device-specific issue - which rules out a factory reset.

I have read similar problems with other people on the support forums. Hopefully Apple can patch this issue with a quick iOS 9.0.1 before the release of iOS 9.1. I'd like to use my wifi at my school 😢

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and if you are having similar problems... Best of luck!

Why can't Apple fix this issue‽ ‽ ‽ I have had this issue since first upgrading my IPad 2 to iOS 9. I now have iOS 9.3.5 and my wifi problem is worse than ever. If I'm playing a game on a web page the page will reset every 45 seconds. It's infuriating. I've tried resetting my network settings but that only offered temporary relief. Within an hour the problem returned. Resetting the network settings is a terrible answer since it causes me to lose access to every network where I connect to the wifi. I was thinking about upgrading to the iPad Pro but I'm reading that those devices are also having this problem. Someone please explain why the Apple programmers can't fix this issue? And why the **** people still hold Apple up as some great tech company. This is ridiculous!

I have realized after I did my update that my wife who works in a major insurance company in Denmark was advised through her company not to upgrade due to serious problems with IOS 9. And going through the IOS History this is not a first timer that there is serious problems with the first realese of a new IOS version.

I must say I am very disappointed. Apple hos one of richest companies in the world why don't you do your home work you should be capable of make a release that works first time. This version seems to me to be more like a beta version. I am looking so much forward to 9.01 release this coming week !!??

I spent about two hours chatting to Apple Support yesterday (20.09.15). As you would hope from the name, they were supportive. On their instruction, I had to fiddle about with a proxy setting, then had to do a restore. Unfortunately, the restore was based on a May update I had in iCloud. Consequently, I had to retrieve some missing apps that I had bought since May. However, there was no cost to me as the App store 'remembered' I had paid for them.

A thoughtful and lucid explanation. I have a similar problem, my wife's iPad Air 2 upgraded and connects perfectly to the wifi networks that we use. My iPad 2 upgraded fine, except for being unable to connect to any web site on either wifi network. I (foolishly) deleted Chrome to make room for the upgrade on the iPad 2 so I cannot connect to the internet now with the iPad 2. I have reset network settings and Safari cookies and history, having done countless resets on the iPad itself. Very disappointed, if the upgrade is advertised to be available and suitable for the iPad 2 it should work.

I have this same issue with IPad Mini 2. We upgraded IPhone 6+ IPhone 5 and IPad Mini. we have two networks in our house. Both phones connect perfectly to either network but the iPad whilst showing the Wifi icon plus the blue checkmark saying it is connected, simply does not work. We cannot access the internet.

OK folks, mea culpa, or at least I think that I've solved my problem and hope to help you as well. I discovered that my VPN was having a problem with the iOS9 upgrade. When I went to their site, they said that uninstalling and re-installing their program would solve the problem. I did so, and now have a working iPad2 that connects to the wifi network and is protected by the re-installed VPN!

Hope this helps!

My iPhone 6 and iPad Mini Retina are both having issues as well. My wifi (WPA2-PSK [AES]) has worked fine for my apple devices, until the last few days. If I turn it off, my LTE is lightning fast, but as soon as I hook back up to my wifi network, I time out on everything I try. Extremely frustrating.

I have reset my network settings, power cycled (home and side button simultaneously until apple logo appears), reset my modem and my router all to no avail. It's maddening . . . I use the internet for everything. Hopefully a fix comes soon.
