Combining the input of multiple keyboards

In order to improve my ergonomics, I decided to buy a wireless keyboard to use with my Macbook pro so that i can use one hand on the macbook and another on the keyboard. While this has been quite good in doing what was originally intended, it seems that the computer deals with this by switching between the two. This means that when I go to use shortcuts in the way that I normally do, Press Cmd on the internal keyboard and then for example f9 on the external, it doesn't register the inputs together to perform the desired shortcut.

Is there some way to allow for my Mac to register that Cmd on one keyboard and a key on the other means a shortcut?
