iOS 9 lightening to USB audio clicks and pops

Hello,

I use my iPhone in a Chevy Volt via lightening cable to the car's usb port. After upgrading my iPhone 6 to iOS 9, the audio consistently clicked and popped. This only happens via usb, and audio from the headphone port is fine. I confirmed this with the Music app, ibooks, iHeart Radio, and Pandora. I put the phone in airplane mode and it had no effect, meaning, the clicks and pops still existed.

I quickly downgraded my phone to iOS 8.4.1 before apple doesn't allow it anymore, and everything is back to normal. No clicks and pops.

I'm putting this out there to:

  1. see if anyone else had this issue
  2. see if anyone else came up with a solution
  3. to let apple know this needs to be fixed in their next update hopefully.

It's a shame that this glitch happened. as otherwise, my phone was great with iOS 9.

Thank you.

I did want to chime in again on this. I had the same issue on my toyota prius. When I went from 7 to 8, the toyotas would not play music from my iPhone. This happened to all toyotas. I called and called apple and they said they were not going to do anything. A few months later when I went into the dealership, I made mention of it to my service advisor. He said toyota heard about it and redid the software for their radio. He said while its in service, they will do that TSB that toyota sent out about people having trouble with their apple products playing music over usb. It tells the dealers to upload the new software so they did that as my car got the oil changed.

I have a big fear this is going to happen to our chevys. Just FYI I have a chevy, ford, and a toyota. The toyota update they did ***** still. It will play now but pandora locks up the system every time. The Ford Sync works great and clear. Yes, my 2013 chevy suburban is in this mess with you guys right now and I hope it gets fixed. When my suburban goes back into the dealership for an oil change, I will ask them if there is a TSB issued from Chevy to correct this problem, If you guys want to call your dealerships now then go ahead. They will send it up to chevy. If I was a betting man, I am betting that the end of all of our journeys here with this problem will be getting some sort of new software from our dealerships from a TSB issued from Chevy like Toyota did. I could be wrong and Apple could fix it but all I can say is apple never fixed the toyota issue and toyota had to fix it on their own.

I finally signed up to these forums just because of this issue, to try and keep current with any updates.

I am having the exact same problem with my iPhone 5 (CDMA) with iOS 9.0.2 through my 2011 Holden (Chev) Cruze factory radio.

The issue looks to be contained purely to USB connection since update to iOS9, Bluetooth Audio doesn't have any problem at all. However I prefer to use USB for audio as the sound quality is superior, just not since the iOS 9 update it seems, now it sounds like I'm playing vinyl.

I had ruled out the factory USB input as the cause, since my iPod classic (160gb) can play the same tracks faultlessly as well as my iPad Retina (running iOS 8 still). Also all other sources on the head unit (Radio, CD/DVD and HDD) work flawlessly. So I thought the phone hardware was faulty until I found a few threads on these forums describing the exact same issue.

This is a shame as I had literally (this week) just cleared time in my calendar to purchase a new iPhone 6S 128GB to replace what I thought was a dying iPhone 5.

Unfortunately I will definitely be holding off on purchasing a new iPhone until this issue is resolved, as tbh integration with my car is the one thing in the past that has really set the iPhone apart from the equivalent android models.

As the factory head unit is heavily integrated into my vehicle (HVAC, Convenience settings etc...) replacing the radio is not an option, so that leaves the options of: new phone or new car - and that choice is pretty simple.

I really hope this issue can be resolved soon, in the mean time I'm downloading the iOS 8.4.1 ipsw for a rollback (massive inconvenience) and will be testing integration of friends android phones in my car, as I can't stay on a legacy iOS version forever.

This is starting to get a little more frustrating now. My attempt to downgrade to iOS8 was unsuccessful - resulting in the following error: https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201442

Not sure what I messed up as I've been through this process with previous iPhones without issue.

I guess I just have to stick on iOS9 and wait on Apple to resolve the USB audio issue 😟

Important points:

- iPhone 5s

- iOS 9.0.2

- Cadillac SRX 2010 with Bose

I too get pops and crackles in my audio when using my iPhone 5s connected to my SRX via USB-lightning cord (tried several different brands of cords). I did not have this problem with iOS8. I have Bose speakers. I have tried everything to troubleshoot this issue. There is no simple fix.

I posted earlier- same issue with my 2011 Saab 9-5. I feel sorry for us because I'm not confident that Apple will fix this- all their focus seems to be on CarPlay and they might not pay attention to this. That is where they are investing with car manufacturers. Moreover, I have friends with BMW's and other cars reporting related type of irregularities. The fix should not be expected to come from the auto manufacturer for this type of issue- audio degradation through USB?

Apple is a premium brand with premium price used by a growing loyal fan base, but I've noticed in the last couple of years, they have started to take their consumer base for granted and the bugs are growing and many unresolved. I am one of those people who has been a loyal user and I'll take this one, but I guarantee if this continues I will think of changing what I use from Apple.

Totally agree, it should just work as it has always done.

However, what really interests me: did you say you can reproduce it in a BMW? Until now it has only been recent GM cars with HK or Bose speakers. Nothing else.

If a BMW has the exact same issue this would really change the scope of the matter. Can you post more car details please?

Its not just gm cars with Bose or HK. Many of these GM vehicles including mine (2011 Equinox) have either base, or factory Pioneer systems. Mine is Pioneer as that's what GM puts in the Equinox, Terrain, and many others.

I don't think the issue is isolated purely to car audio either.

There's other posts around re: iOS9 dock connection and noise issues:

Also, looks like this isn't the first time software changes have caused similar issues:

Hopefully Apple resolve this like they did previously (assuming Apple resolved it and not the 3rd party manufacturers?).

I just talked with apple support again (3rd time), and now I got in touch with a person in the senior apt of apple support here in norway. He will be my personal help throghout this major issue with iOS9.

I reffered to this link again, so they are watching us now :-)

There is a couple of small things he told me to do, before he will take this to the engineers at apple.

Im going to film when im connecting to the stereo in my car, and also take a picture. So I will do :-D

I will get back to you, when I get some more answers.

But there is one thing all of you in this tread have to do…Call support and don´t give up, because we have the right to be taken serious .. The people that choose apple is people who love music and good sound.
