Q: iOS 9 lightening to USB audio clicks and pops

Hello,

I use my iPhone in a Chevy Volt via lightening cable to the car's usb port. After upgrading my iPhone 6 to iOS 9, the audio consistently clicked and popped. This only happens via usb, and audio from the headphone port is fine. I confirmed this with the Music app, ibooks, iHeart Radio, and Pandora. I put the phone in airplane mode and it had no effect, meaning, the clicks and pops still existed.

I quickly downgraded my phone to iOS 8.4.1 before apple doesn't allow it anymore, and everything is back to normal. No clicks and pops.

I'm putting this out there to:

  1. see if anyone else had this issue
  2. see if anyone else came up with a solution
  3. to let apple know this needs to be fixed in their next update hopefully.

It's a shame that this glitch happened. as otherwise, my phone was great with iOS 9.

Thank you.

Hi! I have the same problem with my Latest version of SAAB 9-5 (2010-2011) which is a GM based car with Harman Kardon stereo . After updating to ios9 the clicks and pops started with my iPhone 6 connected through the lightning cabel. And I tested with all possible music apps...clicks and pops!! My girlfriend have iPhone 6 with the ios 8.4 and got no issues like I didn't have before update.. So it's a software issue on the latest update, even the ios9.2 didn't fix it! So apple, please fix this problem... I've been an apple iPhone fan since you started, because of the sound quality. I really don't want to start looking for a another Mobile brand. Truls (Norway)

Hmm, another Harman Kardon. I tested it in a 2015 Opel (also GM) an it was fine, but in my 2013 Opel Ampera (identical to Chevy Volt) it has this issue. The 2015 Opel has a standard factory sound system, my 2013 Ampera has a Bose system.

The further we can narrow it down the better. Does everyone with the issue have a premium sound system by Harman Kardon or Bose installed in their GM car?

Saab 9-5 2010  use the same NAV system as Opel Ampera so I think it is probably the same with iPod connection to the Harman Kardon and Bose in the infotainment system at the different GM cars..

Same problem here. 2014 Chevy Suburban with Bose system. Before I upgraded to 6s+, I had the 6+. I decided to update to iOS 9 beta on my 6+.  After noticing the popping, I quickly downgraded to iOS 8. No problems afterward. Now that I have the 6s+, I'm stuck and have to live with that annoying sound until a fix comes out!

FWIW, I just upgraded to a 6S and fully updated to iOS9.02 and

surprisingly works very well with my MicrosoftSync system in my

2012 Ford Focus.  Even my 24 bit Apple Lossless files are playing

clean and smooth (they would pop, drop out, skip, etc. in my previous 5S).

All the CD rips, iTunes downloads, and Apple Music Radio are playing

    well via USB.

Re-paired (as opposed to repaired) Bluetooth to my 6S and it now gives

me hands free phone phone operation.  Took a couple tries, but that was also

true of my previous phones as there was a very small window in tie to respond

    with the pairing code.

2011 Chevrolet Cruz with Pioneer Sound System - never had an issue until iOS 9.0 and the updates. Getting clicking and popping with music and podcasts.

No more popping when plugged into the AUX port of my Suburban. Thanks for the advice. I still want apple to fix the issue so I don't have two cords running from my phone (aux cord and usb for charging).

Yes, the AUX will be unaffected because this is an analog input where the iPhone converts digital to analog.

The problem is with the USB connection where the car audio system has to convert the input signal. This is clearly a GM only problem in combination with iOS 9.

I suggest keep posting the issue here, because Apple does monitor the forums for bugs like this.

Ok, now I have talked with apple support about this serious issue for the second time, and I reffered to this tread.

I can see that some of you is satisfied with the "quickfix" AUX…

One thing is that the soundquality is poorer, but the most critical thing is the safety around this.

When you use the usb, you will manage the phone from the stearingwheel, and you have the possibility to see what song you are playing in the infotainmentscreen..like it was ment to. In norway it is stricktly forbidden to hold and use your phone while driving…pretty smart rule i think. Thats why cars have handsfree and usb connection.

So down to the bone..Apple has destroyed a part of the phone you bought, so it would be a well enough reason to get the money back if they dont fix this issue.

But lets keep calm a bit more..i think they will fix this.. because i dont think they want all the negative publicity if somebody crashes because they where fingering with the phone in AUX mode.

I agree, the AUX thing is not a solution, it's a workaround. USB audio is a basic feature of any smartphone, so this must be fixed, simple.

It's especially strange that it has worked just fine from iOS4 to iOS8 and now all of a sudden Apple has 'unfixed' it. So weird.

    Easy!

But I advice all the people who got this issue with the ios update, to call apple support Center and demand a fix like I did!

    The more the merrier!

Same problem with iPhone 6 running iOS 9.0.2 in my 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe with factory Bose system (via Lightening to USB cable).
