What charge light? iPhones don't have charge lights.
When you plug in your iPhone to charge, the battery meter at the top of the screen should get a lightning bolt next to it. That's all the indication you get when charging.
iPhone chargers don't have lights either.
If you are using a 3rd party charger consult its user guide.

I've never seen any such charging light on an iPhone, so what exactly are we talking about here?

Once it gets a full charge then it will go back to green. If you want to change it immediately you can go to Settings | Battery and turn off Low Power Mode.
What are you talking about? iPhones have no charging lights.

The OP said charging light but they mean the battery icon. It goes from green to yellow when you enter low power mode.
IT goes yellow on power saver mode. It's supposed to happen

In iOS 9 enter low power mode. The icon turns yellow.
😕
EDIT: I admit I did not know about the yellow indicator now. Good to know. Sorry.

No problem
silly me - I thought my iPhone had jaundice!
Should I charge my phone while it's *in* power-save mode? Or turn that off in settings?

It will charge the same either way.
Top right corner of screen is a battery profile, that can show red yellow or green. Maybe this is only visible when you have the option chosen in battery to show battery percentage
