Q: iPhone 4s is stuck on 'slide to upgrade' after the IOS 9 update!

After installing IOS 9 on my iPhone 4s, I reach the hello page and can then choose a network connection but after that, I get stuck on the 'slide to upgrade' page! I have tried rebooting my iPhone but it makes no difference; the same problem just reoccurs. I have seen that other people have had the same problem but I haven't seen any ways to fix this problem!

I have had this problem since yesterday, I must say Apple are being very tight lipped about sorting this problem & seem to be leaving it to individuals rather than fixing the issue they created.

Steve Jobs will be turning in his grave!

I also have this problem. I've followed the guide about restoring from iTunes instead of iCloud but my phone has a passcode.
After I do a restore it asks for the passcode and I enter this, but then it downloads all the updates, and finally tells me that Upgrade is complete and to press "Continue".

And that's when the Slide to Upgrade reappears and it all starts again!!

And you can't get into the phone to turn off the passcode.

Same problem with my iPhone 5C,

    Shows  'slide to upgrade'

After sliding.....it asks me to enter passcode then showing Apple emblem and the progress bar.

    That has frozen.

It then goes back to showing 'slide to upgrade' again .

Its very frustrating that Apple are not responding to its customers with any assistance or advice at all.

In this techno world I thought they would be able to reply very quickly.

I hope they don't do this upgrade to cause an issue to older version iPhones  to make you upgrade to the latest version of IPhone.

Its very disappointing as I thought they were the best in the business,

Awaiting any sort of help or advice or just a reply Apple,  as we all rely on our iPhones and need to be able to use them asap.

    Exactly the same problem.

The only way I could get my iPhone 4S to work was enabling it as a new device.  Whenever I tried to restore from the local backup I just made prior to upgrading the problem occurred.  I couldn't return to iOS 7 or 8 either.

It is very frustrating to know all my data is there but that it is useless.  I was able to retrieve all my photos (using a tool other than iTunes) and to restore contacts and some applications from an old backup I made in 2013 (also with a tool other than iTunes), and now I am working to enable again work email, calendar and applications.

I should have stayed at iOS 7.

See this article. By the way, this forum is not manned by anyone from Apple, just users like you who volunteer their time to help.

    hi guys,

Only way to fix this is to actually put phone into recovery mode and restore iPhone...to do this, plug phone into computer and open iTunes, hold down the power button and the home button simultaneously until the screen goes black and the apple logo appears, then release the lock button but keep the home button pressed. You can then restore, restore and update phone! This will try but iOS 9.0 on again.

You can download iOS 8.4 from apple online and then to apply this you would hold the 'alt' key when clicking restore. This will allow you to select iOS 8.4 and will put the phone onto that software update. Only downside it that this will completely erase everything on the phone, it wont allow you to backup in iTunes but if you have iCloud then you will get your photos and contacts back when you set the phone up again...make sure you know your apple ID and password as this will be needed to use phone again.

There will hopefully be an update out soon (9.1) that should fix this issue on the 4s phones.

    Hope this helps!
