Podcast App iOS9 -- Good and Bad discussion

Curious to get a dialogue started. I personally feel that Apple really doesn't work on their App (or take it seriously) or they would have long ago integrated features from other apps (Downcast, Overcast, etc.). I feel each update is pretty incomplete and if they would work a bit harder, they could make a good product.

The worst issue, for me, is the Episode List spacing. It's bloated now, with worthless descriptions, making it so much more tedious to scroll through and look at episodes. (This is my main complaint with the Unplayed Tab). This app needs a compact view badly.

Good

1. Music App style play window -- this feature isn't critical, but adds a nice option of controls while looking through your list It's not user friendly (it's so small and cumbersome that someone like my dad couldn't use it well), but the idea is nice.

2. Unplayed tab idea -- notice i said idea. I like the thought that you can go to one screen and play all your new podcasts in a row. (my problem will be listed later)

3. My Podcasts -- seems cleaner to me, though i think the change is small

4. Podcast playing screen -- the added space is cleaner and makes it easier for my fat fingers to use

Bad

1. Oversized Episode List -- (makes it much harder to scroll through and see your episodes). It includes an unnecessary clip of the "description" of the episode...which is never informative and a waste of space. In the 20+ podcasts I have, not one has any useful information there that I will ever look at. Such a waste of space. They need to offer a compact size.

I think that this is really bad design....I like the "more" button to press for additional info, but why crowd the visible space? Terrible idea.

2. On the Go -- it's gone and you can't get it back. Stations do not work because it includes an entire Podcast. Creating a playlist can't be done. You can only add to "Up Next", which is a terrible/poor substitute.

3. Unplayed Tab -- the spacing is bad (needs a more compact design), and the fact that this is the startup screen is annoying. You should be able to change it to go to "My Podcasts" or rearrange them. Annoying.

4. Fullscreen -- i didn't use this feature very often, but I notice many people commenting on this.

Overall I feel that they didn't make the app better, it's a push at best for me. They took features away, and added one/two (Music App style player, Unplayed Tab). The Oversized lists will make me not use this app. I will go back to Downcast (which I still use for several podcasts) or Overcast.

I'm always confused by Apple's updated. They push things that aren't better, (the podcast app has sucked for so long)....and their approach to their apps (and app design) is opposite from what they do with their Hardware. The hardware is fantastic...but the apps are just poorly thought out and executed. Maybe its a software thing the don't get. iTunes is a design trainwreck. White on light gray color scene....it's the worst thing I have ever used. So impossible to distinguish between things....it's a giant leap backwards.

I'm having a hard time believing how bad this update is:

1. No on-the-go, or custom playlists of individual episodes

2. No fullscreen option for video

3. INCREDIBLY laggy on my (admittedly ancient) 4S, to the point where it took so long to play I thought the phone had crashed. I was going crazy searching for the play button, before realizing that holding down on the podcast description was 'meant' to play it.

4. Using the Play Next feature, I left the app, and after playing audio from a different source, went back and found that it had forgotten the podcast I was in the middle of. Had to go back and find it again.

I'm a huge fan of Apple generally, and the last version of Podcasts was fine for me, used it daily, but, between this update, and what they did with iBooks, I'm having serious doubts about Apple going forward.

Not a big fan at all. Since I have a podcast, I've noticed a couple of things that really bug me.

First off, the unsubscribe button is large and covers the reviews # on the episodes tab. Sure, you can go to the reviews tab but it looks more like someone just didn't QA that too well.

The thing that really angers me the most is that the categories under Top Charts have been consolidated. Now it only lists the top 150 of the parent category. This limits the exposure of any podcast that isn't already established and keeps me from being able to get a rough gauge on where my podcast stands overall in its category. Never mind that I was sitting at 14th in Other Games and 151 overall for weeks, which had been resulting in an increased listener base. Now, I have no presence on the Top Charts and I've seen subs and downloads level off. Whereas I was once properly categorized alongside other alternative gaming podcasts such as Critical Hit and Drunks & Dragons, now I'm categorized with podcasts like God and Guns, Honda Podcast, and Hollywood Babble-on.

This update completely squashed all the hard work I'd done to get the attention that I'd received.

Two, non-layout or new functionality notices:

1. bug (IMHO) fix: if you clicked "sleep 15" (or any other time) and then, say 12 minutes later, tried to reset the sleep time to 15, selecting 15 would change nothing. You had to select another value, then select back to 15. Now, if you select 15 it immediately resents back to 15 as expected.

2. new bug: if you select "sleep at end of podcast", i have had it multiple times, but not always, fail to stop playing.

The new Podcasts app is the first time I've had real trouble with "missing" the right button (outside of gaming anyway). Is this because I'm still on an iPhone 5, and newer devices are slightly larger? Is it that big a difference?

iPhone 5, and I've got the jump 15 seconds forward/back buttons when I expand the podcast to full screen.

I still don't understand why it sometimes downloads episodes and why it sometimes doesn't. I don't understand why new episodes will appear further down in the "Unplayed" tab, below theoretically older episodes that had already been downloaded (I guess because the post date is different, even though they weren't available to download?).

And I really really wish it would stop suddenly hanging. It doesn't seem to crash - the app never just disappears - but although the episode is supposedly being played, the time counter isn't moving, and there's no sound. I need to press different buttons again and again to resume playback, and I haven't yet figured out what a "magic combination" to make it work would be. I seem to never be able to resume playback of the episode that hangs, but instead need to jump-start it with another episode before going back to the episode I was originally listening to. Is anyone else having this issue?

After I updated my iPad to iOS9 I already expected some smaller inconveniences.

The flat design which started with iOS7 looks 'clean' and 'modern' but it's in general not that intuitive anymore (what's a text field and what's a 'clickable' button, very poor contrast etc).

Since they push the new streaming service, the music app has become cluttered with things you don't need for local music.

Well, I was really slapped by the new Podcast App: I wanted to watch the Apple Keynote presentation (hic!) and couldn't believe, it was not possible to run it full screen anymore!!

Not only the small area of the video but also blinding white bars on top and bottom are not bearable when watching a video!

Hope it was a mistake only and not an intended feature... And they will fix the Podcast App with 9.0.1

Btw: for the iPhone it seems to be OK with full screen, just turn it 90°. On the iPad this doesn't work...

the previous podcast app was not good - it wasn't terrible but it was a downgrade in some areas from the one prior to that. however, this app has removed nearly all of the things that were actually good. very, very, very disappointed.

pro or improvements

actually don't have any at the moment. seriously. i have been looking really hard.

cons or screws ups

  • stuff doesn't download automatically anymore. it looks like it has but then i go to play something when i'm out and it has a cloud symbol next to it.
  • the "scroll" at the bottom showing what is playing is too small on a 5s. i get that they want/expect people to get a 6 but many won't.
  • under "my podcasts", i cannot edit the order in which i see each one.
  • why are the podcasts i've not subscribed to right at the bottom? why are they not in with the rest? no need to change that but if you do, let us control it.
  • do not like my "stations" being above the main list of podcasts. they're now too small and should be in the unplayed section because they only show unplayed podcasts. c'mon apple, that is obviously.
  • the slider is almost impossible to use. can't get hold of it to move forward or back.
  • they made it more like the music app which is one of the most awful apps the iPhone has.
  • but MOST of all, no where does it tell me how many hours of podcasts i have! that feature was immensely important to me. so annoyed this is now missing.

after years of iTunes being ones of the crappiest pieces of software in the modern world, they've slowly managed to improve it; but their management of podcasts continues to get worse. everyday, i still get around 20 podcasts from last year suddenly being downloaded because i "supposedly" haven't finished listening to them.

almost didn't update to iOS9 simply because i figured the podcast app was gonna get worse. but i went ahead and did it anyway. really wish i hadn't now. will be looking into other podcast streaming app because i want one that actually works. i'm fairly patient and balanced when it comes to things and always look for positives. nonetheless, this *****. it really *****.

well done apple, well done.

*slow clap*

I'm totally unhappy with this new version. Mostly with the removal of on the go. I listen to podcasts in my car and that feature was excellent for finding my recent times fast. This whole "up next" thing is a joke. I can't find a list of what I've added to it. There is no good way the navigate if you're like me and download older podcasts from favorite shows. It also is aggravating that you can't simply go to the App Store and give it a poor rating - at least I don't see that option on the listing for it. That's what lead me here to make a comment.

AT any rate, if I were to rate it, I'd be giving it 1 star. It's horrible.
