mid macbook pro09 ssd upgrade then used time machine

I bought a samsung ssd evo 850 and I formatted it with my mac. Replaced the drive and ran through the os install, which worked fine. I then used time machine to restore my data, which worked. However after it finished I was not able to remember my password. Tried all sorts of passwords to no avail. I was not able to reset my password with the ssd, seems like it booted to fast for the option to do the password reset I found on the forums. I put my old hd in and was able to reset my password. After the reset, thinking that when I put my ssd back into the mac and then the question mark folder keeps appearing and haunting me. I put my old hd back and it still boots to the ? Folder. I have used another mac book to wipe out the ssd to use it to reinstall the os and it finishes but when in my mac it still boots to the ?. I am currently running a time machine restore to my original hd to see if that would help in trying to get to the password reset or any boot options. I am not able to boot to the install disk pram reset... Any links or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You reset the password via the Recovery HD. I have no clue what you were doing. It's done as you see here:

Forgot Your Account Password

For Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks

Boot to the Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the upward pointing arrow button.

When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.

Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow

instructions in the dialog window that will appear.

Or see:

Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password

OS X Mountain Lion- Reset a login password,

OS X Mavericks- Solve password problems,

OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.

If the SSD still has a valid Recovery HD, then do the following:

Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch

Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

Boot to the Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears.

Erase the hard drive:

1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.

2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the

left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.

3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on

the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on

the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.

4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

because it is three times faster than wireless.

This should install the version of OS X that you had installed.
