iOS 9 Notes does not have new formatting features

I have updated to iOS 9 on my 3rd generation iPad. I did update my Notes app. But I do not have any of the new formatting options. I tried starting a new note under On My IPad as suggested. But still nothing. I checked iCloud and I do have Notes turned on. I tried turning Notes off in the iCloud setting to turn it back on. But I got the warning that if I turned it off, all notes would be removed from my iPad. So I cancelled that. I don't want to risk losing my notes.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated

I noticed this on my phone yesterday. If I'm not mistaken I saw a prompt that you need to update Mac OS that you access notes on for this to work , and that's not till October I believe.. I've since updated old and new iPads and am simply going to wait until Mavericks is released. I'm just offering this as I came here with another question and saw no reply to yours. If someone else has better information I'm all ears.. Cheers.

tthanks sberman.. I knew someone with a ton of "points" would speak up! Just glad it was you and not some ---- jumping on my "Mavericks" mistake;-) obviously I meant "el capitan" but slipped..

i swear.. Wall Street , pismo, lions and tigers and bears (oh my) ... Now mountains;-)

i don't remember where I saw that prompt about the link to osX but I swear I did(?!).. Good luck Rhonda.. I've noticed a lot of discrepancies between ios9 on everything from my (4yr old "ancient ") iPad 2 to my iPhone 6+.. But I'll roll with it.. I appreciate the improvements over the bugs!

LidiaG, thanks for your comments.

Indeed your original post was correct: those folks using Macs with iCloud Notes should wait until OS X El Capitan is released in a few weeks to upgrade Notes, because until their Mac is upgraded to El Capitan, the upgraded Notes cannot be read or created on a Mac.

By the way, the names used to be big cats, but are now California places (such as Mavericks, which is a beach, not a mountain).

Enjoy your Apple gear!

just checked my devises and all (iPad 2 thru iPad Air 2) seem to be running with the updated formatting.. thanks for the os/ios info.. that clarifies it

i was simply noting the fun with the os names... I live in California currently and hike to these places often.. we often joke about was future os names will be .. Sequoia is my bet ;-)

Indeed if you turn off iCloud Notes on your iPad, all iCloud notes will be removed from your iPad. But as long as you have iCloud Notes turned on anywhere else, the notes will be retained in iCloud.

So you could safely try turning off iCloud Notes on your iPad, then turn it back on, and your notes will reappear.

UPDATE - Just make sure that is exactly the way you implement this - turn off iCloud Notes on your iPad. Do not, for example, delete the notes explicitly.

I Knew my 3rd Gen iPad was too old to have the sketch feature. But my husband's iPad is a 2nd Gen and he has new features. When he starts a new note a + appears at the lower right corner of his note. When he taps the + a tool bar pops up with formatting options. He can also create a checklist with circles beside items in his note. I never even get the + on mine. I did try turning Notes off and back on in iCloud but that didn't help either. It sounds like I may have to visit the Genius Bar to see what's going on. I do appreciate all your suggestions and help.
