Q: iphone 5s upgrade frozen iOS 9

hi all,

I doubt I'm alone, but I tried to upgrade my iPhone 5S from iOS 7 to iOS 9 this am, and am stuck. All my photos, etc are backed up, so I don't care if the solution is to wipe and restart, but not sure what else to try.

1) Upgrade froze on the slide to upgrade screen.

- I tried to restore from backup, but can't because 'find my iPhone' was on before I tried to upgrade.

2) I restored the phone via recovery mode (I think) and  I got partway through the iOS 9 setup (passcode, touch id, wifi) before it froze again. It then went into an endless reboot loop.

Any time I try and just restore phone/restore from backup (which was made from iOS 7.x) via iTunes, I get an error that it can't because 'find my iPhone' is still on.  When I logged into iCloud website, my phone is linked to me under 'my devices' and not listed under find my iPhone anymore.

HELP!?  Thanks!

Here's one person's solution: How to backup photos from bricked iPhone (slide to upgrade) after upgrading to iOS 9.

Here's Apple's solution: If the Slide to Upgrade screen won't go away after you update to iOS 9 - Apple Support.

If you have no success with the above then sign into your iCloud.com page, click on the Find My Phone icon, and remove your device from it. Then try this:

Placing your device into recovery (DFU-Device Firmware Upgrade) mode:

Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.

       1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the

other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.

       2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds

until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.

                  * If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the

Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,

release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.

      3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the

device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,

let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some

charge, and then start with step 2 again.

      4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.

When this screen appears you can release the Home button:

      5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:

      6. Use iTunes to restore the device.

If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.

Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

    Thanks Kappy!

For anyone else reading this, I tried first doing restore from backup (with the old ios7 backup) and it would still freeze on the slide to upgrade. SO, I repeated the instruction above for the DFU mode restoration, and just decided to set up as a new phone.  Now, my phone is functional, but will have to re-install all the apps (annoying but ok).  All my photos etc are no longer on the phone, but thankfully I'd backed up my photos before I started all this!

Good luck if you're still stuck!

    Hi all,

i tried following all the instructions above. however, doing DFU mode doesn't help because it will just always go to the Progress which is stuck. When I tried several times to connect itunes to my iphone, it never connects. It says, to be able to connect, please respond to your iphone. but how can i respond to my iphone if it is stuck to the progress bar.

after almost maybe 50x of trying, an error message finally appear which says: "itunes could not connect to this iphone. an unknown error occured (0xE8000065)."

    Please help.

    Thanks,

    Humprey
