80GB iPod classic problem. RED X

I feel like I've tried everything, but I shut my iPod off today and when I turned it on all I get is a grey background with a RED X in the middle telling me to go to apple.com. I don't know what all this about, all I do know is I can't see or play any of my music. I've tried resetting it and still nothing. Any ideas???
