Have you used a different AppleID with iTunes previously? Use the AppleID you used to buy your songs and apps from the iTunes Store or AppStore.

I have, several in fact, but only because I have been forced to because the current one was not recognised. I've always assumed that the iCloud and iTunes password were supposed to be the same but that's obviously not the case. There's something flakey going on here IMO. I've only just noticed because I've remained logging in to iTunes for some time. I've now logged out of iTunes and have tried & failed to log back in with the current and previous 4 passwords (can't remember any further back than that). Another forum recommended a solution using the 'manage apple ID' link but that didn't seem to help. My ID has remained the same since me.com days or at least the part before the @. The rest it seems can be me.com, iCloud or mac.com. the me.com option is the email address I use day to day.

Not necessarily. You can use the same AppleID with iTunes and iCloud, but any item you purchase will be tied forever to the AppleID you used to purchase it with. To access your older purchases in iTunes you have to use use the AppleID it has been purchased with.

If you only have one AppleID but changed the passwords, that is a different problem. Is the error message you are receiving abot the password or are you asked to validate your account?  It may simply be the problem that your credit card has expired and you need to add a new experation date and security code.

You can do that at https://appleid.apple.com/, use the "manage my AppleID" link. To reset the password, use the "I forgot" link.

if you cannot reset a password you have forgotten, see this support document:

They certainly used to be the same. It was only when my login details suddenly were no longer recognised for some unknown reason

that I was forced to change my password. This happened a number of times.

Are you seriously telling me that If i can't remember this old password I will no longer be able to download my purchases. If your system hadn't forced me to change the **** thing so many times I wouldn't be in this tedious and frustrating position. Let me remind you that every time the password changes there a lot of work involved when you have 5 apple devices as I do. Particularly when you use the iCloud password to login.

    give me a break

iTunes login in now saying 'cannot connect to server' and no it's it not my router/wireless/ISP. I assume I'm locked out for security reasons.

Forgive me but I have zero confidence that going through the reset password torture again (with all it's knock on effects) won't just bring me back to exactly where I am now, which is essentially everything working fine apart from iTunes.

If you did not create a new AppleID  and it has always ever been the same AppleID with iTunes, and iCloud recognizes your password, the password cannot be the problem that you cannot sign in in iTunes. For your current AppleID you need the most current password. What is the exact error message iTunes is giving you? And at which occasion?

go to itunes> new password associate with the new Apple ID

if you use icloud you will have to change it the same way, and on all devices that are synced.

if no other synced devices don't bother just do what you do to make it work in your world.

Really the probem lies in the fact that any changes means every device first has to be shut donw completely

includes icloud, ipad, ipod, iphone, itunes. once this is and any desktop, lap top or mini.

once all are shut down then you can created a new Apple ID for all devices at once.

also just so you know if you change the Apple ID in one product you can use the password for all the others if you shut them down before you address

a new Apple ID. the reset is the password in your primary device
