  1. look at Activity Monitor (Applications → Utilities → Activity Monitor) and see if there is some background process running that is the culprit. Use Activity Monitor on your Mac - Apple Support
  2. look at Console (same place) and see if there is an error message that will tell you what process is the culprit http://computers.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-use-console-your-macs-diagnostic- diary--mac-45251
  3. download and run Etrecheck http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck and paste the report here and we can take a look and see what the problem is.
  4. use Disk Utility (same place) and run First Aid on your hard drive and volume(s) on the drive.
  5. check the battery on your Mac: Check the battery condition on your Mac - Apple Support
  6. try an SMC reset Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support
  7. a lot of things can cause symptoms like you are describing. How old is your Mac? the HD may be failing. The battery may need replacing. Your HD may be too full. You may have installed software like MacKeeper or CleanMyMac which has screwed up your Mac.

Dear Arthur, many thanks for your reply, i have tried this and the screen shot is attachedUser uploaded file. Funny the noise has gone now and the system is running fine.

i will try to back up now to my external hard drive as this was impossible before.

however now my iPhoto will not open and it says to download the update from apps store but the US App Store is saying it does not have the upgrade
