Q: iphone with IoS9 incompatible with Snow Leopard

I have an iPhone 5s running IoS9 (as well as an iPad and and iPad Mini, also running IoS9). I've updated all three over these past few days and now wish I bloody had not. The problem is the when I now try to sync them with my 2008 MacBook running Snow Leopard I can't: I am told the iPhone needs 'a newer version of iTunes', presumably because of IoS9. The trouble is - that my Macbook has the latest version of iTunes it can use - newer iTunes versions need a more recent OSX.  I have just added four more CDs to my iTunes library but can now no longer sync it to transfer them to my iPhone. I know it is virtually impossible to revert to IoS8.4.1 which I had before, so what can I do? I was going to contact Apple support but they want £25. I think that's a bit thick seeing as Apple is responsible for this situation. Can anyone suggest a solution (other than 'buy yourself a newer MacBook - this one works just fine and doesn't otherwise need to be replaced).

Same here. I bought an iPhone 6S Plus two days ago. My Macbook 6,1 with Snow Leopard forced me to install the latest itunes version 12.3. Impossible with Snow Leopard. After installing the only available OSX El Capitan the itunes sync worked slow but fine. Unfortunately the Macbook was not usable any more (every start of a programm takes 2 minutes...). So dont even try it. It consumes only time. Luckily a made a time mashine backup my well running Snow Leopard system...

The Apple Hotline in Germany told me, there is no way, except to use iCloud backups only or to buy a new Macbook... Not accaptable...

So what shall I do? I needed a new phone now and not a new Macbook. So I returned my iPhone 6 S Plus yesterday and bought a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 instead. It`s a acceptable device for even 450 € less...So there is enough budget to buy all the Android versions of my Apps again... But isn`t it strange that Apple forces me to to buy a iPhone without iOS 9? I am afraid there are no technical, but economical reasons at the apple side...I am really disappointed.

    I've been looking at this post as this same thing just happened to my girlfriend this morning (Friday, Oct. 2). Yesterday she updated to iOS 9 (I don't know right now if 9.0 or 9.0.1 or 9.0.2) via iTunes over the wire, and then got the message that her phone wouldn't work with iTunes.

     

    If I understand this thread correctly, I should downgrade her back to 8.4.1, then re-upgrade her to iOS 9 over wireless instead of connected to iTunes.

     

    Question: does anyone know if 8.4.1 remains signed by Apple? Would it be too late to downgrade tonight (Friday, Oct. 2)?

    Looking at https://ipsw.me/signed#iPhone54, it appears that, no, iOS 8.4.1 is no longer signed.

     

    I'm disappointed that iTunes would even allow her to upgrade her phone to an iOS version that her iTunes itself doesn't support.

     

    What about restoring the iPhone to its last backup? She backs up to iTunes over the wire...is there a way to put the phone into recovery mode, connect it to iTunes and restore it to her last backup, and would that put her back to 8.4.1?

    Ikalliance the iphone is not visible with iTunes 11. So how could you make the restoring?

    I made the downgrade on thursday without bigger problems.

    Who could check out, if it is true, that you could make an update to 9.02 over wifi so that you could use your phone with iTunes 11.x

    So now Apple are not signing iOS 8.4.1. They've effectively bricked my iTunes and therefore my mac-iphone experience. But if I was running Windows I wouldn't have a problem.

     

    Even though I used iTunes 11.4  to upgrade my 5s to iOS 9.

     

    My machine is a 32EFI so cannot be upgraded past Lion. So I'm being punished for having the latest iOS but not the latest OS X. Even though I've been happy with this arrangement for the last few years.

     

    So Apple allowed me to upgrade to iOS9 with no warning that I would no longer be able to backup, update, sync, copy music to my iPhone and control my apps. My daughter can no longer sync her iPod. They then disallowed anyway for me to downgrade to a version of iOS that actually works with my computer. Now I have a phone that I can't update or backup or put music on. A now useless phone that is barely over a  year old.

     

    Thanks Apple. For ruining my apple experience with no warning.

    Please note that your help page about iOS 9 says that it works with Snow Leopard as the minimum spec. This would be false advertising surely?

    I too have been caught by this.

    How the fxxx can itunes prompt me to upgrade my ipad and then not work with it anymore???

    No warning - nothing!!!

     

    I can no longer sync my ipad and to cap it all i decided to reset the ipad to factory defaults hoping i could connect to itunes/restore my backup and then do the upgrade over the air.

     

    But no......even resetting ipad  automatically installs ios9

     

    SO NOW I HAVE AN EMPTY IPAD WITH NO HOPE OF BEING ABLE TO RESTORE ALL MY DATA!!!

    All my app data and daughters data is now sitting on my mac!!

     

    What a bunch of absolute cretins @ apple

     

    I have seriously had it with you apple - I have a macbook, an ipad and an iphone.

     

    I will not be forced to upgrade my macbook as i dont trust your OS not to screw up all of my programs

    After doing a little looking around, I find myself skeptical that you can't upgrade your 2008 Mac past Snow Leopard. I'd start there.

    MMaybe we could try to fool the iphone by modifying the version.plist file within the iTunes package to make it looks like it was the 12.3 version....

    Every post even slightly complaining is being deleted.

     

    So before this goes.

     

    To be honest, the only recourse for anyone on this thread, is to go to Macrumors and read up on upgrading your OS using bootloaders and the like. Yes, Apple are forcing you to become a Hackintosh owner, unless you've got a spare grand lying around. The good thing is you'll learn a lot.

    I have an idea that I'm trying right now. You could install Virtual Box on your MacBook then install Windows 7 as a virtual Machine. Next download the latest iTunes for Windows which is 12.3 I think. Then you could transfer your iTunes Library and any iPhone backups to their proper locations on Windows Virtual Machine and do a sync all within Windows. I'm currently running Snow Leopard and just experienced your issue myself so we'll see how my idea pans out:-) Currently I use my Windows virtual machine to break my phone out of Alcatraz which is what gave me the idea to try the plan above. Not to mention if you decide to stick with iOS 9.0.2 and my Windows Virtual Box hack there are now tools to spring your 9.0.2 device from Lompoc, CA. It's a win win (I hope)!

    UPDATE*** It worked! So if you have to stay on Snow Leopard and would like to upgrade to iOS 9.0.2 and above just install Virtual Box which is a free program. Install Windows 7 as a virtual machine, install the latest Version of iTunes, transfer both your iTunes library and any iPhone backups to the proper directories within Windows 7 and sync. Just be VERY thorough and careful when you transfer the iOS backups and iTunes libraries and make sure everything is in its proper directory. It's that easy. I even managed to free my iPhone 5 from Leavenworth thank to our friends in the far east. Let me know if that works for you.

    UPDATE 2*** The location of Mobile Apps (Backed Up iOS Applications) differs slightly in the iTunes folder on Mac and Windows.

     

    On a Mac, backed up Apps are located at iTunes/Mobile Applications/

     

    On a Windows machine they are located at iTunes/iTunes Media/Mobile Applications/

     

    To get everything to sync properly in Windows make sure to create the "iTunes Media" folder and move your Mobile Applications folder inside when you transfer your iTunes Library to Windows.
