Update iPad 2 from iOS 5 to 9 or 8?

Well after reading all these horror stories about iPads 2 killed by update, I decided to take my iPad2 to the danger.

But there's a puzzle:

Currently it has iOS 5.1. The latest OTA version offered to it is 8.4.1.

I've checked for several days, and iOS 9 is not showing up there.

iTunes on a PC says that the upgrade available to it is 8.1.1.

(the iTunes is version 12.1.3.6 - the latest).

So what does this mean?

Is my iPad 2 not compatible with iOS9 at all, or I should first update to 8.4 OTA? or to 8.1 via iTunes?

(Of course, I cannot delete the downloaded 8.4.1 update because neither iOS5 nor iTunes support this.

And the update does not show up under storage settings, as some people advised)

Any thoughts?

iPad 2 will take 9. Perhaps you simply can't go higher than 8.x from 5.1?

I certainly wouldn't try going to 9 again yet, after all the trouble it's caused me in the last 24 hours.

Ipad 2 will take the latest only. Which is iOS9 now. If you want to have iOS8 you should have done it earlier. Not possible now.

The upgrade is always to the latest iOS. No other possibility.

Not all iOS9 advertised possibilities for ipad2, but still MUCH better than iOS5.

Not true. The ipsw for 8.4.1 is still being signed by Apple and is definitely an alternative when updating through iTunes. Besides which the OP is only seeing 8.4.1 available for OTA, which I suspect is due to download volume management more than anything else (I didn't see 9 available to me OTA until the second day of release).

Really? Install iOS8 then asap. Then you still have the choice to stay with it, or go for iOS9. In that case I propose to wait for the first update of iOS9 when you want to upgrade.

The user of this iPad2 refused to take the risk and update to 8.4 because he worries it may kill the device. So, my apologies, I can't report the outcome.
