Sometimes Mail just gets confused, and Restart of your Mac puts it right.


The general way to debug such problems is to use:


Mail > Window > Connection Doctor


... if the window shows any red lights, click on the red light. This takes you to the detailed settings for the Incoming or Outgoing Server (yes, there are two, and they are different) that is having a problem.


If you have misplaced the settings provided by your email provider, you can re-create the settings for many popular services using this Apple web site:


https://www.apple.com/support/mail-settings-lookup/


Note that Apple does not store the email address you enter, or send you any emails based on it.
