Q: iOS 9 Volume Indicator with Smart Cover bug

Just putting this out there for those searching for the same issue...

There is currently a bug in iOS 9 that prevents the on-screen volume indicator from being displayed on-screen when the device is wakened from sleep using the Smart Cover/Smart Case.  The volume buttons still do in fact adjust the volume as they should, but there is no on-screen volume indicator that shows the volume and it's adjustment level. The workaround is to sleep the device again, but waken it using the Sleep/Wake switch rather than the Smart Cover...or simply wake the device using the Sleep/Wake switch in the first place. This has been tested on two iPad mini 2's and an iPad Air 2.

Same issue here. However I do have passcode and smart case, and the volume button is not responsive after waking from smart over. I have to re-lock the iPad using the power button and then unlock with home button for it to start working. I have iiPad Air.

Seems as if this issue affects different iPad models differently. I have two iPad mini 2's and an Air 2 under iOS 9.0.2 and they all behave the same way. If wakened with Smart Cover only, no volume icon. If a passcode is used and the iPad is wakened with the Smart Cover, then the passcode is entered, the volume icon displays fine. I've heard differing reports with different devices, such as an Air 1...it's a strange issue.

Sorry yes I see what you mean about passcode, if the allocated time for passcode to kick in when smart cover down then it works. If you use and then put cover down, and pick up before the passcode kicks in then yes the volume control doesn't work when using the buttons on the side of the device.

This issue has still not been corrected in iOS 9.1.

Same issue here. I'm using an iPad4 with iOS9.1.

    I don't use a passcode.

When I open the cover there is no volume indicator.

When I activate the iPad with the power switch or home button and swipe the lock screen, the volume indicator works fine.

Supplement: When I use a passcode, close and reopen the cover, swipe the lock screen, enter the passcode, the volume indicator is visible.

Can you clarify that answer? So it has not been fixed in iOS 9.2 beta?

hello!!!!!!! guys i have found an extremely simple solution for ios 9.1!

    1. see the volume bar? on the left of it is a small button that can be changed left to right. it normally is left and change it to right back to left it should say Ringer silent and then Ringer full bar and pull up your bottom thingie like swipe up from the bottom and done. if your button changes for lock screen,go in settings, general, look for USE SIDE SWITCH TO: and click Mute. hope i helped!!!!!

Sorry but that doesn't help in the least bit. Yes, it does show the volume icon when the side buttons are used but the buttons only control the alert and keyboard sounds (or "Sound Effects" as shown on the volume icon). This only allows the volume icon to display when on the Home Screen or in main apps like Safari or Mail or Messages (etc). If you're in a game or a similar app that uses the standard "Volume" icon, the icon still does not display.
