Q: New "Photos" Program - how to use with images

Has anybody managed to use "Photos" yet

  • I cant find the photo files
  • I can't see the file extension
  • I can't see file size
  • I can't check meta data

All the basic functions you would expect. I do not have iPhoto on my new mac and Apple have stopped Aperture.

I would love to know what you professionals do?

Thanks Mike

    ...

    • if you have converted your iPhoto Library, or imported new pictures into your Photos Library, that's where your "photo files" are; in contrast to iPhoto, there no longer is any "Show in Finder" command, as it is not promoted to go looking inside your Library. The library itself is normally in <yourusername>/Pictures..., but you can move to an external hard drive if it is formatted Mac OS Extended, if the drive has a (fast-)wire connection (USB, FW, Thunderbolt) with the Mac, and if permissions on the external HD are set to "Ignore Ownership".

    • The file extension, as well as file size and metadata are visible if you select a picture and choose "Get Info". This is just an example:

    Screen Shot 2015-09-19 at 19.26.31.jpg

Note that the first line is the "title", and if you have not filled in this field, or copied the second line (filename) to the first, nothing will be displayed. But you can clearly see the extension ".JPG". Please note that if you shoot in RAW+JPG the files will be stacked. That's one of the reasons why I keep my RAW files out of Photos. File size (in my case 6.3MB) can be seen in the second 'block' as well as a few exif data (icons at the right), and more exif data (ISO, focal length, etc.) can be seen underneath.

    So, what are you missing?

I cant find the photo files

Don't you see the photos in the Photos, Albums or Projects window.

    Photos001.jpg

If you use the key combination  of Option+Command+S the sidebar will open and display all of the albums that were in your iPhoto library before migration as well as a folder of albums representing each iPhoto Event.

I can't see the file extension

    I can't see file size

    I can't check meta data

First go to the View ➙ Metadata menu and select all of the metadata listed:

    Pviewmetadata.jpg

Now select a thumbnail and bring up the Info pane with the Command(⌘) - i key combination. There will be the info you wanted:

    Pinfowindow.jpg

If you'd like to have the file name show below the thumbnail use this Applescript from the Photos User Tips section to add the file name to the Title field: Photos for Mac: Batch Changing the Titles to the Filename.

There are other Apple scripts in the Photos User Tips section to batch rename the title to something other than the file name and to batch add text to the Description field in the Info pane.

The following should also help you understand how Photos works:

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there is a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

NOTE: It's been reported by several users that if the Event albums are moved out of the iPhoto Library folder in the sidebar they may disappear.  It's not widespread but several users have reported that issue.  Therefore, if you want to assure that you keep those Event albums don't move them outside the iPhoto Events folder.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

The downside to the simulation is that the Albums/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can also be sorted manually, either in the sidebar or in the folder's window at the right.  This will change with the release of Photos 2 with El Capitan this fall.  That will allow the sorting by date or title, ascending or descending.

Tell Apple what missing features you'd like restored or new features added in Photos via Apple-Photos Feedback.

    OT,

just to let you know: I get email messages when someone replies to a topic I'm participating in, but this is the first time I got this warning:

<<Be careful: this message is probably not safe! If you don't know the sender or what the subject is about, please do not reply to this e-mail or do not click a link.>>

I trust you, but do you have any idea what's the matter?

That's the first I've ever heard of that.  Is this in a reply to an ASC topic?  Who is your email provider?  If it's not an iCloud account then maybe the provider thinks there's something amiss in the email.

I'm in Belgium with a Belgian ISP (no iCloud). I use Apple Mail. I get about a dozen of such messages a day, depending on how active the ASC forums are, and how active I have been myself, but never seen any with such a warning.

    Screen Shot 2015-09-20 at 09.56.02.jpg

This is more of that same message, the one you posted above, with several screenshots (mind you, I only get the links to the pictures) and links.

Don't think anything's wrong, but will watch out for warts!

It has to be the Belgian ISP mail servers that are adding that warning to the email.  We'll send Tim over there right away to get them to fix it.

Strange thing is, I get lots of emails from topics I'm following (=the ones I'm participating in), but only that one of yours had that warning on top. So Tim must be  somehow aware of you. But he's welcome here; I'll give him one of our better beers.

It must have been  something with the screenshot I included in the post.  Maybe a strange character in the file name.  Or maybe it's my bad boy side coming out.

So it might have been something 'toadish', as Larry implied. I'll keep a close watch...
