Can I convert Microsoft Office documents to iWorks?

I am a Windows PC convert and have excel and word documents. I purchased Office Mac 2011 with my iMac in 2012. I would like to transfer all my documents to iWorks (numbers and pages etc) so I can save them and have them upload automatically to iCloud Drive when I save them.

Is this even possible? Or even a good idea? What would I need?, Obviously a current version of iWorks and an iCloud account.

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

What you might do is create some new documents in iWorks, get your iCloud account, and see how you like it. Also, convert some of the Office documents and compare converted iWork formats against originals. If you are happy and not exchanging files with others, go for it.

But personally, I'd stick with Office 2011, keep your documents in those formats (.doc, docx, .xls, or.xlsx. Later upgrade as needed to Office 2016xx.

No, I do not work for MS:)

Hi LilBang,

I believe both Pages and Numbers can open Word and Excel documents directly. There will be formatting differences and Numbers and Excel have some different functions and ways of handling them.

Since you are on Yosemite you should have the programs already. Give it a try. You might want to save with a different file name incase you need to refer back to the original.

You're probably aware but just in case I thought I'd point out that using Office Mac 2011 or Office Mac 2016 you can easily save documents to iCloud Drive.

I use both MS Office and Numbers. Each has its strengths.

Do I understand you correctly that if I save an Excel file in Finder>Documents>xxx; it will be saved also in iCloud drive> Documents.xxx automatically.

I believe I have to save the MS Office document twice, once in finder>documents so I can re-open it on my iMac and once in iCloud drive> documents to share it on my network. Then they have to save it to there MS office documents to get any updates.

I was hoping it would work like dropBox, but I don't see those results, or am i not waiting long enough for everything to sync?

iCloud Drive in Yosemite is similar to Dropbox. It's a special folder in Finder that syncs via the cloud to your other devices. No need to save a document in two different places to sync via the cloud. You of course have to make sure you save the document in that folder. You can't just put it anywhere in Finder (nor can you do that with Dropbox).

SGIII - Thanks so much for your enlightenment. So.. you do not use "Documents" in your sidebar in Finder? This is where I was referring to having to save twice ; once in "iCloud Drive" and once in "documents". If I "save as", say, an excel document in iCloud drive>documents, will iCloud drive then update the file in "Documents?

I also keep three frequently used .xls documents in my dock for quick access. If after modifying these files I just "save" them and then "save as" them to iCloud drive they will be available to my other devices in the newly revised format

I save documents I want in iCloud in the iCloud Drive folder. Documents there are on the Mac and are also synced to the cloud.

I use Documents for items that I don't want in iCloud.
