Q: Syncing Microsoft Outlook Notes with iTunes 12.3

This functionality appears to have been taken out of the most recent version of iTunes, version 12.3. This has been confirmed by a discussion with Apple Care Support. The support person is also a user of Outlook Notes and noted that she could no longer sync Outlook Notes with her iPod. I use Outlook Notes extensively and until the most recent update to iTunes 12.3 and iOS 9.0, this functionality worked flawlessly by selecting Sync Outlook Notes in the Information tab of the device when using iTunes.

Does anyone in the community have this issue and found a work around? In versions of iTunes going back about a year and half, this same issue arose and magically the functionality returned to iTunes. This time Apple has added functionality to Notes in this new release of iOS 9.0. This might have introduced a compatibility issue with Outlook.

Appreciate any help from the community or Apple directly.

Apple will not fix this screwup. See this thread for details and alternatives where you don't have to do such a workaround. I've used Contacts for notes, but find it more tedious.

The issue is when you upgrade from iOS8.4.1 to iOS9.1. I recently had to return my iPhone 5s that had iOS9.1 installed that I could not sync my notes while using iTunes version 12.3.1. Apple issued me the same new iPhone 5s but with iOS8.4.1 installed and now I can sync with iTunes version 12.3.1. Now this new iPhone wants to upgrade to iSO9.1 which I will not. I will stay at 8.4.1 until they fix this issue or when the time comes I will switch to another brand that supports notes.

My apologies. I have since found that this sync appears to be somewhat limited.

    • If I create a new note in outlook, it syncs to Gmail notes but does not sync to my phone.
    • If I create a new note on my iPhone/iPad (under my "NAME'S GMAIL" folder, it will sync back to Gmail and from there to Outlook.
    • If I edit a note originally created on my iDevice from either Outlook or the device, it will sync both ways.

The net result is a bit frustrating. I can view my notes on Outlook but cannot create them there and have them sync to the iDevice. The problem is clearly at the Apple end - unless a note is created at that end it won't sync.

    (I'm running iOS 9.1 and iTunes 12.3.1.23.)

Unfortunately, Windows Phone and Android phones don't come with built-in Outlook Notes sync. Correction, Windows Phone comes with built-in Notes sync if you sync with OneNote in the Outlook.com / Office365 cloud.

I have the same problem. Does anyone know what needs to be done to call Apple's attention to this issue? Apple's telephone support and a visit to the genius bar resulted in the same outcome i.e. the option has been removed. For some reason this issue has not caught their attention although there must be thousands of people affected by this situation which I'm sure does not require a big effort to solve.

Great workaround.  I use Notes for ready access to lots of information.

Your solution allowed me to keep the info synced between Outlook 2013 and iTunes 12.2

Thank you for keeping this post active. Without diminishing the ingenuity of the workaround unfortunately it does not solve the problem of syncing the information. If you add or update your records regularly in Outlook Notes 2013, now you need to remember to update the record you created in “contacts” so that it will sync with your Apple devices. I hope that Apple will take note of this issue that affect millions of users that need to operate in both platforms and bring back the ability to sync Outlook notes to Apple devices. Please keep the post alive so that Apple will take note of the importance of the issue.

I started this original posting. At this point, I have given up on Apple. iTunes is no longer a reliable way to even sync contacts with an iPhone or iPad. Some but not all information seems to sync. At present since I have a Google account, I have now started to sync using Google contacts and tasks. I had already been using Google Calendar to sync between iPhone, iPad, and Microsoft Outlook. I am now doing the same with contacts and tasks. The solution requires a third party solution from 4 Team, Sync 2, because Google stopped supporting Google Sync for those of us that don't have a corporate account.

For sync the content I kept in Microsoft Outlook Notes, I moved to Microsoft OneNote. It comes with Microsoft Office and as it turns out, it is a very reliable way to sync between my PC and iPhone/iPad. It does require you to have a Microsoft Live account and to use Microsoft OneDrive. So far it has been very reliable and easy to use.

Good bye to Apple on this one. Don't expect they will ever return back functionality. If they do, most likely it will be temporary so it is time to move on.

I agree!  I am going to move to a different product.  No more Apple for me.

    Hi, all.

Like most of you, I'm using Microsoft Outlook for planning my job and my life. I accepted, regretfully, that iPad and iPhone do not sync Outlook tasks when I started using them, in 2011. It is now very hard to accept that also Outlook notes are no longer syncing with those devices. Besides those two devices, dating back to 2011, I'm still using a very old Nokia N97, that is syncing fine with all Outlook features. As you can imagine, I'm planning to replace all those devices shortly; do you think I give up with Outlook in order to keep Apple? I appreciated and am still appreciating Apple experience very much, but interoperability is a value for all involved vendors, while the lack of features or services induces users to carefully consider a brand instead of another.

    Hi folks

A friend of mine referred me to two workarounds to solve the problem of syncing Microsoft Outlook Notes to iOS. The first one is called Copy Trans. You can buy the complete suite of solutions which includes Contacts, Calendars, etc. or just a single one for Notes only. The second one is called iMazing. You can do a search for both names and read more about it. From my preliminary reading I'm more inclined towards the Copy Trans App. Just for the record, I have no interest in any of the companies mentioned here and as you can read from my previous entries I'm "feeling the pain" as all of you are. Has anyone heard about these two programs?

as you can see in the linked article If you can't sync contacts and calendars using iTunes for Windows - Apple Support Syncing notes isn't supported with iTunes 12.2.2 or later or iOS devices with iOS 9 or later.

if its too important you can use copytrans http://www.copytrans.net/support/itunes-can-no-longer-sync-iphone-notes-with-out look-what-to-do/

Quick update to my latest entry. I received answers from both companies I mentioned in my earlier entry but unfortunately they do not sync records, they just facilitate the transfer of notes between devices. Here are the replies:

This is the reply from CopyTrans:

Note that CopyTrans Contacts does not detect duplicate notes. In addition, you can transfer notes from iPhone to Outlook and from Outlook to iPhone, but not sync.

This is the reply from iMazing:

In general, iMazing does not sync to devices; it only allows transfer to and from them.

Specifically with notes, you can only export your notes from your device, not add new notes.

I'm going to try http://www.fieldstonsoftware.com/ as previously suggested by another participant on this forum.

Don't waste you time with Fieldstone, doesn't work. Look at my post. I suggest you abandon Notes and use MS OneNote. Works great.

If you have a Google account, use calendar and contact through them.
