Thank you for your continued involvement in the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you have checked to ensure that Push is enabled for the email account in question on your son’s iPhone 6. Does he have more than one iCloud account set up for mail on his iPhone by chance?
In either case, to begin troubleshooting, I suggest reading over and working through the steps outlined below from the attached article. Specifically, I believe that steps 4-6 may be helpful in this situation.
Get help using iCloud Mail - Apple Support
If you need help sending or receiving mail on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
- Make sure that you're connected to the Internet. Try to open apple.com in Safari on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
- Go to iCloud.com on a Mac or PC to see if you can receive email for your iCloud account.
- Tap Settings > iCloud and turn on Mail on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
- Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, and Calendars > Fetch New Data and turn on Push. Then send an email to your account to see if Push is working.
- Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, and Calendars > Fetch New Data. Then Tap your iCloud account and turn on Push. If you have multiple iCloud Mail accounts, you can use Push with one account at a time. Make sure that Push is turned on for your primary iCloud Mail account.
- Turn your device off and back on.
If you still can't send or receive mail, turn off each of the settings in steps 3, 4, and 5 above, then turn them back on.
Please don’t hesitate in replying with further information about the issue or to let the community know what steps were taken to get the account pushing new mail as expected if it has already been resolved. We look forward to your continued involvement in the Apple Support Communities!
Best!

Sep 20, 2015 3:03 PM in response to joe_7399by Dreanmachine1,Thanks for the reply, but I have tried previously and tried again, per the instructions, and the issue is not resolved. I have even signed out a couple times from his iCloud account and back in, still no luck. All his settings are the same as my iPhone 6 under iOS 9. If his email app is open, he will get the notification icon, banner, and the e-mail in a push process. When the app is closed out, nothing comes through, until I open the app again, and bingo. I went into his web account, and the e-mail hits just fine there. He only has one account installed. He does forward his gmail e-mail (and it has the same behavior). Is this something with Apple servers and something in his system?
Note, his iPad Air has the same issue.
