I get the new iPhone every September and this year is no exception. In the past I usually just set my new iPhone up by restoring from a iCloud backup. I was thinking of setting up this years iPhone as a new device. Is there any benefit from doing this or should I just continue as always and simply restore from backup?
Unless you're having problems with your phone that are attributable to corrupted data, I don't think there's any real benefit to setting the phone up as new. There are some real downsides, though. You'll have to re-download all of your apps. You won't have your Messages history. Or your Recents history. If you have documents store on your device, you'll need to transfer them over. You'll lose all of your Health data.
Is there a way to not transfer everything? I have 32Gigs on my old phone. I don't want all of it clogging up my new device. Just my apps and app data and my safari passwords. Everything else is backed up elsewhere it would be nice to start fresh - new backgrounds wallpapers etc. Am I just expecting the moon on a stick?
Does iTunes and iCloud both back up health data?
In order to retain Health info, the back up must be encrypted. iCloud back ups are aways encrypted. You have to opt in to encrypt your iTunes back up.
Sorry. Restoring from a back up is all or nothing.
