Q: Iphone 4s went to apple store

So what did they say? As your iPhone is long out of warranty (assuming that it is) you will probably get neither. Did you try this:

Where does the Apple Store come in to this?

And neither do we. We have no idea if your problem is due to a manufacturing defect. If the Genius at the Apple Store determines that the malfunction is covered by the warranty you will get a replacement unit. You will not get your money back.

You left your phone at what shop? Who did you leave it with?  What did they tell you?

No. Like a refurbished iPhone 4S. Apple has to provide you with a WORKING unit (refurbished or new). As the iPhone 4S is over 4 years old, you will most likely get a refurbished phone.

If it was truly an Apple Store you would have probably gotten an answer without having to leave the phone at the shop. So what store was it?

Not at an Apple Store. Unless your friend was within the 14 day return policy. They would have replaced the unit. So for the THIRD TIME:

"What shop was it? "

The less vague you are the easier it will be to answer your questions.

Well, then there is nothing we can ever speculate on about what will or will not happen. You would need to put that question to Vodafone....
