Q: passcode

I installed iOS9. Now the iPad wants a passcode. I don't have tried various passwords that I use and now I device is disabled.

If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support

I got as far as Step #2 on these instructions and the iPad goes no further. What now? Apple support requires the Serial # to talk with me and I can't get it since I cant turn on the iPad. Any other suggestions?

The serial number is in many places.
