I haven't yet tested this, but try opening the new News app and selecting your favorite news sources. I suspect this will do the trick.
Unfortunately the News app is missing for my region (México), nevertheles, I tried changing to US region, chance my favorite sources and still have the same problem...
I should not have assumed you had the News app. Simply changing the region on the device will not help since I believe it's tied to your AppleID.
GO to setting , general, then spotlight search ,then disable Siri suggestion.
If you don't have the News App, there is a way to change the news sources that appear in Spotlight.
Siri makes the suggestions based on pages that you visit. If you open Safari and navigate to your favorite news sources, eventually one of those news sources will appear at the bottom of your Spotlight Suggestions news list. The oldest stories that came from a news source that you don't want will eventually disappear - as long as you don't click on them! If you succumb to the temptation of clicking on an interesting headline from a news source you don't want, then Siri will think your "clicks" mean that you like that news source.

I have also went into the News app and I have unchecked or unsubscribed to sources I don't like yet those are the sources that keep popping up. I don't like CNN and I don't read the New York Times. All I get are suggested articles from these sources and nothing that it suggests would be anything I'm interested in. Very bothersome. I really do hope that there isn't some sinister push of what Apple wants me to read as others on here are suggesting. It makes me sick to see some of the articles it suggests.
Hi
The search screen (shown when swiping left from the Home screen) shows trending news items based on your location.
If you would prefer to turn this feature off, go to: Settings > General > Spotlight Search - turn off News.
If you would like to suggest that Apple adds options to exclude and/or specify preferred news sources (similar to adding favourites for the News app), you can submit feedback here:
I had this same issue, as I had previously lived in Hong Kong and could not get rid of the 'local' Hong Kong NEWS feed, despite having moved back to New Zealand. I noticed today that Google was also defaulting to the HK site, something I not noticed before. After some digging I found that region format was still set to HK, so I changed it to the correct setting, NZ. Hey presto, I'm now getting the NEWS feed for NZ.
Path: Setting > General > Language & Region > Region Format > Region
BTW this is not tied to your AppleID, as that was the first place I checked :-)
