Here's another person's suggestion: How to backup photos from bricked iPhone (slide to upgrade) after upgrading to iOS 9.
If you have no success with the above then sign into your iCloud.com page, click on the Find My Phone icon. Click the Devices button, click on your device’s item, then remove if from the list. You should then try this:
Placing your device into recovery (DFU-Device Firmware Upgrade) mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the
other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds
until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
* If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the
Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,
release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the
device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,
let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some
charge, and then start with step 2 again.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
6. Use iTunes to restore the device as New.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

Sep 19, 2015 11:55 PM in response to Kappyby bionerd89,Thank you for the info Kabby, I was able to imported and backup all the current photos in my phone. (Pheww!!)
However, before I restore the phone, do you know why the backing up process is taking forever. It has been 3 hours and it is not done yet. I am willing to wait up to a few more hours because I really want my phone to be the way was before. I am backing my phone up to my Macbook (not iCloud, so it should be faster, but it is still taking forever). I have an iPhone 5s 16 Gb, and I only have about 13 Gb of materials stored on my phone. I don't know why it is taking so long to back up 13 Gb.

Sep 20, 2015 1:06 AM in response to bionerd89by Tomskyair,Forget it, doesn't work. My bricked phone hung in restore for ages but actually didn't do a thing. I could confirm it when doing a reboot and not proceeding with the configuration so that the phone's status bar (mobile network, WiFi, clock, etc.) was still visible. No spinning circle for an active syncing process on the phone.
Apple's suggestion to create a backup is utter nonsense as iTunes will not back up a device which has not been configured yet (sometimes it even gives you a respective warning message about that). Using restore to factory settings or restore from backup will most likely hit more problems like "Find my iPhone" having to be disabled on the inaccessible phone when trying to do it with the phone up and running.
My next try was putting the phone into remote restore BUT NOT DFU maintenance mode. The difference is that the phone is showing a cable and iTunes in remote mode rather than being totally dark in DFU/maintenance mode and then reinstalling iOS 9 using "Update" in iTunes as this would save me from the hassles of wiping the phone and eventually finding out that the backup from a previous iOS version cannot be installed (had happened to me with the iPad after updating to iOS 8). "Update" just means that the iOS itself is being reinstalled. Unfortunately the result was the same: a bricked iPhone.
Here's what I eventually did Solution: Fixing iDevice bricked by iOS 9 update which recovered my iPhone with iOS 8.4.1 being installed.
Unless you have tons of mails and messages that aren't backed up elsewhere that's probably the quickest way to recover your phone as it was before the failed iOS 9 update.
