Problems with mail in iOS 9

I have updated my iPad generation 4 to iOS 9. First the iPad froze when it updated to the OS, I had to press and hold down both buttons for a few seconds in order to restart the iPad.

I have now discovered that the contents of all of my email are missing, the emails are still there but they lack content, it only says "The letter has not been downloaded from the server." The contents of the e-mail is visible the first time I open them, but the next time the content is gone.

How do I recover the contents of my email?

Latest observations

Mail may be working as if the account is imap even when using the pop protocol to access the server. In one account, emails which I had just viewed suddenly are all not downloaded from the server. And there's no "please reload" button. In my other account, emails are sticking so far. But, I do notice that opening many of them requires internet activity (I can see the router and watch the wifi light flash intensely). This may simply be due to web content in the messages, and nothing to do with the mail server at all; certainly, AltaMail does the same.

Diana, I'm wondering if for the Mail account that you lose messages immediately after viewing, if you have checked the "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message: immediately" box in your Preferences? I have now unchecked that box and have had no trouble losing the message content of viewed POP Mail. However after I upgraded to 9-9.1, the content of my saved POP email before I unchecked the box (so that mail has been removed from the server), is gone and still has the "message not downloaded from the server" with no clickable link to reload.

That's not going to help unless you leave all the messages in the IPS inbox, not just on the server.

I've had the 'never delete' setting for years with no problem until iOS 9, even after I've moved or deleted the messages on the server.

Now, I can move a message back to server-inbox, re-d/l, and if I again move it out of server inbox it...disappears again.

The point is, people are still having real issues. E-mail is unreadable, even after iOS 9.1. No fix. No clarification from Apple.

With antenna gate, there wasn't a real issue, not more than any other phone. But Steve took it all very seriously, presented all the real data, gave a good impression of what was really going on, (screwing up the algoritm for showing bars), explained, clarified what was going on, giving away a bumper, releasing a fix for iOS, showing up in person, taking it personally, and all of that after 23 days!

Now, we DO have issues, this discussion has been viewed 20466 times at this point, so something real is going on, and we don't know if our mail is coming back or not!

So again:

The bottom line is that Apple software is no longer a serious proposition if you want to run a serious business. Someone earlier in this thread pointed out that most of the so called "improvements" were aimed at kiddies. I have tried most of the suggested solutions - many of which fail to recover my lost emails. It is interesting to note that I DONT have these issues if I use Outlook on an old Vista (yes - Vista) based machine. Where I have "backed up" using .mbox files these cannot be re-imported into a cleaned out Apple Mail. So much for backing up - I have even lost my "offline" emails.

My advice is dump Apple Mail - in the Trashbin - and instal Thunderbird. I did it four days ago and I have NO issues.

If the trend with Apple is towards whizzy pointless garbage my next machine will be a PC running either Microsoft Windows or better still Linux. Linux is now mature enough to do everything I need and doesn't have these silly issues.

Apple has always had an image of good design on the surface but untrustworthy software and poor networking. It's time may have come.

After a phonecall (not easy to get) with Apple Service in the Netherlands, they told me that the update 9.1 should solve this problem.

I already updated one of my Apples, but that didn't work as far as I can see now.

For me... it is no fun to have an Apple anymore. I liked it, it worked, but after the IOS9 update that really has gone. (And it started already before this update). I lost to many important mails and thereby, I have an Ipod for music. In the past everything was easy to find with just a few clicks. That was the very strong side of Apple. Now I have to know how Apple people think to find what I want. And at this moment, after IOS9, my Ipod and Ipad are working slow and there are some malfunctions.
