Q: Problems with mail in iOS 9

I have updated my iPad generation 4 to iOS 9. First the iPad froze when it updated to the OS, I had to press and hold down both buttons for a few seconds in order to restart the iPad.

I have now discovered that the contents of all of my email are missing, the emails are still there but they lack content, it only says  "The letter has not been downloaded from the server." The contents of the e-mail is visible the first time I open them, but the next time the content is gone.

How do I recover the contents of my email?

I know several people (Several is a word that shows size or number when you can’t be specific or when you want to summarize.) who have ditched their Apple devices in favour of other manufacturers since IOS9 release, because as you quite rightly said they "rapidly falling out of love and losing patience."

    sev·er·al

    determiner & pronoun

more than two but not many.

    That seems about right.

Check your email account settings on your computer under "Advanced", the setting "delete copys from the server after the message has been fetched" is it set to "Direct" or "After a day", set it on "when it has been moved from the Inbox" (option "Never" does not exist).

As long as the message is left on the server, the content remains in the e-mail on your iOS9 unit.

It has to not only still be on the server, it has to be on the server, in the inbox, and you have to be connected!

The iOS9 mail app does not store the mail properly on the device, especially any images & often even just plain text, so you have to keep your server-inbox all cluttered up with anything you might want to read later, even if it's just "later today". IOW it is no longer the d/l & read off-line mail client we have been using for years.

This started with iOS9, so it's something somebody did/botched in the coding.

If it was bad coding it would affect every user, and it doesn't affect every user.

That means that someone looked at the thread 97,000 times.  It means nothing with regard to any problem or issue with the product.

Yes, exactly, but while waiting for Apple to fix real problem this is a temporary solution. Do you want to see your email in off line mode you must first move them from inbox to a archive folder (in online mode), they will then be copyed from the server.

    Doesn't work either.

I don't know what the "archive" folder is supposed to be in POP, but it doesn't do anything more than the inbox does.

And it's only there if I've done settings-mail-move deleted messages to...trash/archive; then an archive folder appears, but I have to then go back to sending deleted messages to trash or I can't just *delete* something.

Whatever Apple did in iOS-9 they screwed up the mail app, which was working just fine for years.

    My feedback to Apple:

Ever since upgrading to iOS 9 my ipad has become sluggish, I experience full system freezes and crashes and my email gives me this message: "message not yet downloaded from server".

Apple I have been a loyal customer for 20 years but this is truly unacceptable. FIX THIS!!!!!!

quidam - truly sorry to hear that your problems are back.

Let's be clear though - this is not a server issue! The issue lies squarely with some devices that have IOS9> installed.

Fingers crossed that Apple are listening to the how ever many of their customers that are complaining and come up with a fix soon. Meanwhile, customers who are experiencing issues with "Problems with Mail in iOS 9" continue to employ workaround fixes.

Yes mariotheplumber, LOL, I had no idea. I kind of laughed when I got the email saying it was deleted. It was the most vague post ever, but I guess you can't post anything at all. Lesson learned. At least I get emails of the posts, that one guy's post (that was deleted) was pretty helpful.

Hello everybody, I´m writing from Germany!

I work with iOS 9.2 Beta since Saturday, 07/11/15!  It seems that this issue is fixed in this beta version, although Apple does not describe this explicitly (as if
nothing had happened)!  All emails incl. attachments (downloaded with POP) are still present and legible, regardless of which folder they have been moved in (archive, trash, etc.).  Search functions also work properly. The old e-mails unfortunately are gone over forever.  So who does not want to wait for the new official iOS, in my opinion can try it with iOS 9.2 beta, if you can obtain it (had read that you are not able to get it in Australia for example).

    Good luck!
