iTunes Playlists, folders, & exporting

Hello,

I create many playlists on iTunes for my work (ex. yoga classes) and so far have been individually exporting specific playlists I don't want to lose, to my desktop so I may easily save them when I back up my system w/my ClickFree back up device.

I recently organized my various categories of playlists into folders.

Questions: Is there a way to:

1) export an entire folder to my desktop so I may easily save and retain all of the individually created playlists?

Or

2) do I still have to individually export each playlist I want to ensure I don’t lose – to be able to save them?

Also, fyi – it would be fantastic if Apple created the feature to select multiple songs at once to be added to a playlist - at one time. It is very tedious to have to go into individual songs, click “add to”, scroll to playlist then hit enter
each time.. I've searched to see if I'm missing something but seems there isn't and others out there comment on / request the same thing.

Thanks for your help!

Well, I guess fantastic has happened!

Hold the CTRL key while you click each song that you want. Then just drag them into the playlist that you want.

Assuming you are in Music view, don't worry, the playlists will become ready as soon as iTunes senses the drag.

Thanks ed2345!

You are welcome!

Any knowledge on exporting groups of playlists / a single folder at a time?

I assume what you want to do is put a copy of all the song files into a separate folder outside of iTunes? Just make the folder on your desktop, then open the playlist in iTunes, CTRL-A to select them all, and drag into the new folder.

(If you normally run iTunes in full-screen mode, make it smaller so that you can do the drag-n-drop.)

Unfortunately, no. That I know how to do.

When a playlist is created, as you know, it is taking a select few songs and keeping them in a specific order. I want to capture the playlist as it is, which you can do individually by highlight the individual playlist, click on File, Library, Export Playlist, and then I bring it to my desktop for easy access/saving. Also, this way it can be backed up as I've created it vs just seen as a library of songs (full library... which mine is huge btw.)

It appears the only options are to export the full library (don't need to) or an individual playlist. I can't seem to find a way to do a "New Playlist Folder" which seems crazy since that is a feature on iTunes.

There are definitely things Apple could do to make iTunes more user friendly and accessible..

If something strikes you, let me know, but I think I'm out of luck and in for a bit of manual work.

Thanks

Israqua,

OK, so if you are looking to export the listing, you are correct. The iTunes ability to "Export" a playlist is for one playlist at a time.

You can use a playlist folder to organize multiple playlists into one folder. But a playlist folder is not exportable.

You can make suggestions to Apple at this link:

Hi ed2345,

Me again. I realized I may have asked a question in reverse... Instead of 'how do I bring multiple songs into one playlist at a time'...

I should've asked ... "Is there a way to add one song to multiple playlists at once?" i.e., I just bought a new song (which is why I realized I had it backwards 😊 lol) and to add it to multiple playlists at once, I have to click, "add to playlist" over and over again via the drop down playlist option. Is there an easier way I am missing?

Thanks 🙂

Israqua,

Yes, there is an easier way. Nobody actually uses that drop down. Use drag-n-drop; just drag the song into the appropriate playlist. It will of course be one playlist at a time (although it can be multiple songs at once, as previously discussed).

By any chance, do the playlists you are dragging into go by specific criteria? If so, the use of Smart Playlists instead of Regular Playlists could possibly automate the process.

Unfortunately, they do not go by a specific criteria bc they are designed for order, "flow", and timing of songs but drag & drop... great advice and no idea why that hadn't occurred to me before...

I've never used Smart Playlists but will play around with them for the other general reasons I use playlists. Thanks for that suggestion. 🙂

In a similiar vein, does itunes 12 allow simultaneously moving say 10 playlists into one folder? Moving them manually, on a small screen, is perplexing; i cannot keep the folder 'open' or displayed? and cannot really drag drop playlists which are some distance away in the display. thanks for any work arounds.

Moisee,

Not that I am aware of. The CTRL-click that lets you collect multiple tracks does not work for playlists. They have to be operated on one at a time.

Thanks so much for fast reply!

Figured out a bit of a work around which worked for me:

i rename the ten playlists to include a 1 at begining of name; this bunches them together and moves them 'up' the way too long list of playlists;

then I renamed the target folder to have a Z, which moves it 'down' the long list of folders ....

Made dragging and dropping tiny bit easier on tiny screen, less ground to cover!

hope this helps someone.

thanks again.
