What you might try is to boot into the recovery partition and install Lion on an external HDD. Also check the iMac HDD in Disk Utility>First Aid to see if it is healthy or not. You can always clone back the OSX into the iMac using Disk Utility>Restore.
Then you have to decide how you want to deal with your data.
