Ios9 text 0.00 in my text box won't go awayp

Just found this solution in Meg St._Clair

1. Close the Messages app by pressing the Home button two times quickly. You'll see small previews of your recently used apps.
2. Swipe up on the Messages app's preview to close it.
3. Try going to Settings>Messages>Show Subject>Off
4. If it's off already try to turn it on then off.

OK as nutty as it sounds go to settings-messages and turn character count "on". Seems to work.
